Akerson’s Approval Ratings Slip

General Motors CEO Dan Akerson (or “Lt. Dan” as he’s come to be known) seems to be raising eyebrow after eyebrow with every decision he has made since he replaced Ed Whitacre as CEO last year.
In an analysis by MSNBC, the publication pointed out several striking similarities between Akerson and former GM CEO John Smale — who in many eyes was part of the reason General Motors fell so far from grace — by attempting to turn GM into a more consumer-oriented company, and putting engineering in the back seat.
Consumer orientation is great, but consumers these days are very aware and much more educated than ever before. And if the engineering funds are being sapped into the marketing budget… then it’s going to be even more difficult to push an underdeveloped product, as history has shown.
Despite Akerson making GM products comparable to cans of soda, it’s just not the same reality.
Maybe the reason Bob Lutz isn’t around right now is because he doesn’t fit in well with Akerson’s agenda…
