GM is setting its sights on India with a sales target of 300,000 units by 2013. This past year was good to GM in India, with sales totaling 110,804 units — an increase of 59 percent. To help meet the target, GM will introduce six new models within two years. Two of the models will be for the country’s burgeoning commercial vehicle sector.
“In India, 40 per cent of the overall sales of the market are in commercial vehicles, and we don’t sell in that market. That is a big, huge growth area,” said GM India’s Boss Karl Slym.
Also, GM has unveiled a new engine designed and developed by its Indian unit; a 1.2-litre petrol engine to be built at the Talegaon plant. The engine will make its debut in the Spark sometime in February.
