Sales of the Lordstown-built new Chevrolet Cruze reached 13,631 in January, continuing its steady rise nearly five months after its launch and helping General Motors Co. post a 23 percent sales gain, the company said Tuesday.
January’s Cruze sales were 25.5 percent better than the 10,865 sold in December. Sales to retail buyers – as opposed to lower profit margin fleet customers – of the upscale small car outperformed its predecessor, the Cobalt, by 129 percent in January.
The Cruze also outsold for the first time one of its chief rivals, the aging Ford Focus, which posted 9,014 sales in January. Ford plans to ratchet up the competition in the spring with a new Focus.
