Apparently, some aren’t fans of the suede-wrapped steering wheel and shifter of the recently-debuted Chevy Camaro ZL1. Since the ever-anticipated debut, multiple GM Authority patrons have written in to express original intentions to purchase the ZL1 upon its availability, but — having taken notice of the suede treatment — have changed their mind. The complaints have ranged from a general dislike of the way suede feels in the hand, previous allergic reactions to the material, as well as negative previous experiences with suede parts experiencing premature wear and tear.
The good news, however, is that the suede treatment will be optional on the ZL1. The standard material for the steering wheel and shifter — as well as the passenger dashboard wrap — will be plain-jane leather. As such, the suede will most likely be part of a special materials package that will cost somewhere (we’re guessing) between $700 and $2,000.
So, potential ZL1 buyers who have a disdain for anything suede… you’ll be able to get your Camaro on while paying less in the process! That said, I don’t find anything wrong with suede myself and I actually prefer the material to leather-wrapped touch surfaces.

Different strokes for different folks..
I dig the Suede steering wheel in the CTS V I drove at Montecello raceway. I am enamored with it to the point I may have my 2008 Corvette steering wheel converted to suede..
For those that suggest the material won’t hold up for 80 k miles…? Who cares! I’d easily enjoy the feel of the suede D shaped Steering wheel and just replace it when need be.
Who pays 50 grand for a car and then sweats the cost to repair after 80 k miles..
I can get a suede steering wheel for 400 or 500 bucks so whats the big deal?
I also like the D shape steering wheel ….
DSVettes is the site for suede steering wheels at a great price.
Just my opinion.

Dear Chevy company I really like the ZL1 please use good judgment with finishing this car with a good dash design and better materials other than suede. I will buy this car if it is not ruined by using bad materials on the interior. I would rather you raise the price and sell this car looking like every one that sees it wants one.
Jack, it specifically states that suede is optional.
That said, suede is more expensive than leather… So if you want to talk about quality, suede is where it’s at! Ever notice how F1 and LeMans cars have suede wheels? There’s a reason for that — because it’s a more race-friendly material.
What about the oil changes DUDE my leather wheel has had oil and grease on it after DEALER oil changes. MANY TIMES!!!
Good point. You’ll just need to tell the service guys that you’re very particular (as am I) and that they should wear gloves when touching your interior. That’s what I do and give the guy $5.
Outside of the more immediate service questions though, I think this is something Chevy and GM need to address — mechanics need to start giving a shit about how they handle these vehicles. Perhaps this is something that GM will address with the newly-branded certified service…
Purchased my 2018 Zl1and I love this car, 1 detail that bugs me is the suede steering wheel, it is terrible for people who use this car, I mean race it at the track, steering wheel is very slick, not good flying around a road course, for people who don’t push this car I guess steering wheel is ok, for me please send me a leather replacement and I will send this back to you guys, other than that this car is bad%$#
I don’t like suede leather on steering wheel or seats or any part of the interior, it gets duty and it’s hard to clean it , and I hate the look . I prefer shiny leather
