Tonawanda, NY Engine Plant To Birth New ECOTEC By 2012, V8 By 2013

The General Motors Tonawanda, NY engine plant is currently undergoing an $825 million makeover in preparation for the production of The General’s two vital next-generation engine lines in the years to come. From what we gather, the next line of V8 engines will feature direct-injection (like the 2.4 liter ECOTEC motor) and an “advanced combustion system”. However, new technology for the ECOTEC four-bangers remains under wraps.

  1. We are very excited about the two new engine lines we were awarded in 2010, but we are hardly dormant. Tonawanda Engine built 353,000 engines last year. That’s not bad in an economy that’s still struggling to improve.

  3. I wish the Tonawanda Engine Plant personnel all the best for a long and prosperous future making great Chevrolet engines and other GM powerplants. You have a long and illustrious history of making perhaps the greatest engines ever made by any manufacturer. I will always recall our high school tour through your plant in 1959, and the many friends who worked there over the years. You have a great company with a glorious history, but its future is in your hands.

  4. I can’t wait for the direct injected V8’s and the V6 twin turbo. We used the 2.0L Turbo LNF on an Airboat and got 310 HP and 340 torque. That boat got 10 miles per gal at 28 miles per hr. What a fuel savings. We are now setting up the 2011 LHU Flex Fuel Buick Regal engine and hope to get it EPA certified. Also setting up an LLR 5 cyl and a 2.4L LAF. These are all great performing engines.
I hope GM will go ahead and produce the 3.6L V6 Twin Turbo and i can find one. I have a customer waiting for this engine for a new boat.
Thanks to GM for building Engines for the future.
