File this one under the “bold-ass-statement” category, as General Motors CEO Dan Akerson has recently blurted out that his company would like to increase production of the Chevrolet Volt to 120,000 vehicles for the 2012 calender year, way, way up from the 10,000 General Motors plans on manufacturing this year.
Currently, the Volt’s batteries are manufactured in Grand Rapids, MI by LG Chem, which is headquartered in Korea. Reports have revealed that the plant is currently manufacturing batteries at full capacity, which in turn is currently the factor as to how many Volt’s GM can produce at the Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant. Unless they plan on some recruiting other sources for their batteries and demand for the Volt becomes stratospheric, Lt. Dan’s claims seem thin.
