If you recall, GM pulled out of the medium duty segment with the cancellation of the Chevrolet Kodiak and GMC TopKick back in July 2009, when the automaker was undergoing bankruptcy proceedings. Since then, there have been whispers of The General re-entering the medium-duty game with something along the lines of a proposed Silverado/Sierra 4500HD model. However sources tell us that plans eventually fell through for such a truck, mostly due to the amazing capabilities of The General’s 3500HD trucks.
Apparently, the new medium duty plan calls for a truck that will be around the dimensions of the late Topkick and Kodiak trucks, making them fit for the commercial market. As for points of assembly, we would think the dormant section in Flint, Michigan — where the former Kodiak and TopKick were built — would be the ideal location.

This is real great news and dishearting at the same time. If we have to wait 2 to 4 years to see this truck come to market. Most of us GM truck loyals will be driving Fords due to lack of product availabilty and won’t need another truck for at least 4 to 5 years out. Then we will have to swallow our pride and drive a Ford even though we know it won’t do the job my GMC does. We would really like to see this truck by the year end to fit into our market place.
that is great i have 3 5500s and 1 6500 i always had good luck with gm cant wait to see when they come back just hope they keep the duramax
Me: Do you plan on growing a penis?
There’s is no news from GM ?
Is there anymore current information on GM returning to the medium duty truck market? 06/23/12
After watching the video of GMs CEO stating they will be moving most of GMs manufacturing to China. The new truck will most likely be made there.
Stabbed in the back after the bailout.
BEST NEWS I HEARD ALL DAY
need a contact at GMC to discuss 2009 c8500 that is a lemon..would like to settle without a wasteful lawsuit..GMC was fraudulent to ever release this piece of junk from the Flint assembly plant
About darn time if it is true. I am getting sick of retiring out my employers good heavy duty trucks because I am the one guy that really likes the C5500/6500 platform. Hope they come up with it before the good freight boxes coming off the old ones are mothballed and scrapped. I’ll give you a hint. They’re yellow and carry ice cream. The 8.1 liter Vortec V8 running off of propane, best platform ever…
Any news?
Anything? Come on, GMAuthority. Don’t need to hear about any more Barrett-Jackson auctions, that’s not news.
Been 4 years now.
