Report: GM Looking To Expand Electric Vehicle Lineup

The Opel Flextreme GT E Concept, a mid-sized sedan featuring the Volt's powertrain

General Motors CEO Dan Akerson is looking for ways to implement plug-in electric vehicle technology beyond the Chevrolet Volt. And with concepts seen in the past such as the Opel Flextreme GT E Concept, Chevrolet Volt MPV5 Concept, Cadillac Converj and the Cadillac XTS Platinum Concept (which was also a plug-in hybrid), The General’s design studios have been busy flirting with different ways to present the technology. Couple that with recent reports of the Cadillac SRX getting a plug-in powertrain as well and we may be beginning to see the makings of a full line of electric vehicles. Or maybe it’s complete bullsquash.

Regardless, the first thing that needs to happen in order for such a plan to be a success is to thin out production costs. Of course, a way to do that is to — in fact — increase production of electric vehicles, which The General already plans on doing. The major factor following production is for the masses to actually demand and buy them, the opposite of current market trends. Then again, in 5-10 years from now, we could all be laughing about such market data while driving the latest and greatest EV home from work… that is if cars don’t drive themselves by then.

  1. the Opel GTE looks awesome! GM’s on a roll and I believe after driving the volt last month…the voltec technology is a natural for luxury brands.

I drove to the Voltec event in my 2008 cadillac cts and clearly the chevy volt was a more silent ride. I was truly impressed.
