GM Europe Collaborates With Fiat On Next Generation Combo

The Opel/Vauxhall Combo van has been long due for an overhaul. Based on the previous generation Corsa, the Combo has been seeing a sales drop due to being overshadowed by newer, more capable vans. However, a next generation Combo has been announced – with some help from Italy’s Fiat brand.

The deal between GM Europe and Fiat involves Fiat supplying a derivative of its Doblo compact van for GM to use for the next gen. Combo. Production will commence December 2011 at the Tofas plant in Bursa, Turkey where the Doblo is built.

The new van is planned to have several variations including a cargo van, passenger van and a chassis cab. The next gen. Combo plans to go on sale sometime in 2012. But will it make its way to North America to steal market share from the Ford Transit Connect? Only time will tell.
