What’s That? Future GM CEO Dan Akerson Dedicated GOP Supporter

Well here’s something rather peculiar. Inbound General Motors CEO Dan Akerson is not what you’d exactly call a devout Democrat.

Political contribution disclosures filed by the Carlyle Group – Akerson’s present employer – reveal details about the incoming CEO’s political affiliations. Here’s a list of Akerson’s recent contributions:

  • A $2,300 check for the 2008 presidential campaign of Senator John McCain
  • A whopping $28,500 in April 2008 to the Republican National Committee
  • A $2,300 contribution to Senator Richard Shelby (R-Ala). Shelby was quoted as saying that government support for General Motors puts the country “on a road to socialism.”

“I do not support using taxpayer dollars to save private companies,” Shelby said in November 2009. “This is not a national problem, it’s their problem.”

With all that support for the Republican party and its candidates, Akerson still got the Treasury Department’s support to head GM.

“Dan Akerson is proven and well-respected with a depth of experience as a CEO in a wide range of major companies,” the Treasury said in a statement.
