GM VSS-F Vehicle Set Platform
VSS-F, or Vehicle Set Strategy – Front, is the abbreviated name of an upcoming automotive vehicle architecture set to underpin next-generation, front-wheel-drive and front-biased all-wheel-drive vehicles from General Motors.
The VSS-F platform, or more appropriately the VSS-F vehicle set, is part of GM’s objective to consolidate platforms, reduce complexity, and simplify engineering and manufacturing processes in order to realize significant cost savings and enable the company to deliver better-differentiated designs more quickly to customers around the world. In that capacity, the VSS-F platform would replace all of GM’s front-drive car platforms with a single set.
Though unclear at the time of this writing, it is also possible that the architecture will replace GM’s front-drive crossover platforms.
GM’s vehicle sets will employ common components and structures, which will save engineering, purchasing and tooling costs. In theory, the undertaking will also enable GM to better tailor individual models to regional markets and specific sectors. For instance, a small crossover for China might share some basic parts but not sheet metal with a mid-size sedan for sale in Europe.
VSS-F will underpin all future front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive cars with a transverse powertrain orientation. In addition, it’s possible that the VSS-F architecture will underpin FWD or AWD crossovers with a transverse powertrain orientation, though whether this will be the case is currently unclear at the time of this writing.
Here are the vehicles we expect VSS-F to underpin, with the first vehicle on the VSS-F set launching in the vicinity of the 2021 calendar year.
- Bolt EV
- Verano (China only)
- Velite (China only)
- GL8 (China only)
- CT2 or CT3 (rumored name of new sub-ATS range)
- Enspire (rumored name of new midsize CUV)
- Granite (rumored name of new subcompact CUV)
- Anthem/Graphyte (rumored name of new full-size CUV)
