The August numbers are in… and they’re not as great as they were for the last several months. General Motors saw a drop in sales of 24.9 percent in the U.S. compared to the same month a year ago, when the Cash for Clunkers program was in full stride, having ended August 24, 2009.

With a 21.4 percent drop, Chevrolet was responsible for much of the decline in August 2010. The bow tie brand is currently responsible for approximately 70 percent of The General’s U.S. sales volume. And since Chevy vehicles were perfect candidates for the Clunkers incentive, we believe that it’s not much of a surprise that we’re seeing a decline.

On a positive (and perhaps more important) note, Cadillac sales jumped 83.1 percent, Buick shot up 66 percent, and GMC gained 14.1 percent.

Altogether, sales of GM’s four core brands fell 10 percent and the remainder of the sales slide was the result of the discontinuation of the Hummer, Pontiac, and Saturn brands as well as the sale of Saab.

The GM Authority Take

No-one likes (or wants) to hear about declining sales, but such is reality. At the end of the day, this is really no big deal: Cash for Clunkers moved a lot of units and helped GM sales considerably – making it difficult to beat those sales numbers last month. It’s even more difficult to do so when Chevrolet hasn’t received any new models since the Cash for Clunkers period. Let’s wait ’til August 2011 to make our final decisions about this. By that time, the all-important Cruze and hotly-anticipated Volt will have hit the market and had their fair chance to stir up Chevy’s sales.

Stay tuned throughout the day as we release our coveted By The Numbers series, where we break out model-by-model sales of each GM brand.

Mr. P. Baledran, vice president of GM India, cited delivery constraints for certain models throughout the month due to a scheduled maintenance shutdown of GM’sHalol plant in India. However, the plant is now back online, which should clear up pent-up demand in the coming weeks due to a constrained supply in July.

“There were some delivery constraints for certain models in July due to annual maintenance shutdown of the plant,” said Balendran. “With the operation back to normal, we should be able to clear the backlog this month.”

The numbers are in, folks. General Motors has sold 199,692 vehicles in July, representing a 5.4 percent increase compared to the same time period a year ago.

Excluding the brands that GM has either sold (Saab) or shut down (Pontiac, Saturn, Hummer), sales rose a healthy 25 percent. Here are the results from each brand (year-over-year):

Chevrolet sales up 32.5 percent

Buick sales up 52.7 percent

Cadillac sales up 39.1 percent

GMC sales up 45 percent

GM is now manufacturing closer to real market demand and has been able to significantly reduce costs by offering less rebates and discounted financing. This allows The General’s vehicles to sell closer to sticker price, something we expect to see in GM’s Q3 fiscal results come August 10.

However, GM saw a decline in consumer confidence in July:

“Consumer confidence declined in July,” said Don Johnson, vice president, U.S. sales operations. “But those people who have put off replacing their worn out vehicles are starting to come back into the market.”

According to GM, incentives ran 10.6 percent of average selling price in the first seven months of 2010 and our favorite automaker has also seen an increase in average transaction prices, which are – by the way – the highest in the industry.

“Year-to-date through July our average transaction prices are up $3,300 per vehicle over last year,” Johnson said.

Stay tuned for our famous By The Numbers series, where we break down brand-by-brand and model-by-model sales, coming up shortly.

Chevrolet-Buick-GMC-Cadillac Sales Up 25 Percent in July
2010-08-03

Steady progress in rebuilding sales one year after launch of new GM

Calendar-year-to-date sales for GM’s four brands up 31 percent

Tenth month in a row that GM’s four brands have increased retail and total sales

Strong Buick and Cadillac sales show balance of GM brand portfolio

DETROIT – July sales for Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac increased by a combined 25 percent to 199,432 units. Buick and Cadillac brands each sold more than twice as many vehicles in July, compared with the same month a year ago.

July marks the 10th straight month in which total and retail sales for GM’s brands increased year-over-year, demonstrating the continued strengthening of each brand in the marketplace as GM continues to rebuild momentum a year after its launch as a new company.

“When we say we want to design, build and sell the world’s best vehicles, we’re not talking about just one vehicle, one brand, or one month,” said Don Johnson, vice president, U.S. Sales Operations. “Our July results again reflect that each of our brands has contributed significantly to our gains.

“The size and scope of the U.S. market demands a strong portfolio of well-targeted brands,” Johnson said. “The success of Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, and Cadillac month in and month out, indicates that the new GM’s brand strategy is sound.”

Buick sold 16,799 vehicles in July, a 137-percent increase over last year. Cadillac delivered 14,919 units, up 142 percent over July last year. These are the highest sales totals for the two brands since August 2008. Chevrolet total sales in July increased 12 percent compared to July last year, and GMC total sales were up 27 percent compared with the same month last year.

GM’s newest vehicles including Chevrolet Camaro and Equinox, Buick LaCrosse and Regal, GMC Terrain, and Cadillac SRX, CTS Coupe and CTS Wagon continue to contribute significant sales gains. Total combined sales for these vehicles were up 77 percent in July and are up 211 percent yeartodate.

GM further strengthened its position as the industry leader in crossover sales. Total combined sales in July for the Chevrolet Equinox, HHR and Traverse, Buick Enclave, GMC Terrain and Acadia, and Cadillac SRX increased 41 percent in July and have risen 73 percent so far this year.

Combined total sales for GM’s full-size pickups, the Chevrolet Silverado and Avalanche, and the GMC Sierra, were up 22 percent during the month, with year-to-date sales 14 percent higher than a year ago.

Year-To-Date Gains Reflect Balanced Contribution of Brands

Year-to-date total sales for GM’s four brands have risen 31 percent to 1,269,009 units, while retail sales for GM’s brands have risen 18 percent – outpacing the industry.

“Our four brands have sold 125,210 more vehicles this year than our former company sold with eight brands during the same period last year,” Johnson said. “This gain has been a result of solid consumer demand across our lineup of cars, trucks, and crossovers.”

Chevrolet has led the increase with total sales 28 percent higher through July, compared to 2009. Retail sales for Chevrolet have increased 12 percent for the year, propelled by the strong retail sales of the Chevrolet Malibu, Camaro, Silverado, Equinox, and Traverse, which are up a combined 33 percent for the year. (READ MORE)

Buick remains one of the industry’s fastest-growing brands, with total sales 60 percent higher than 2009 through July. In the first seven months of the year, retail sales of Buicks have increased 41 percent on the strength of LaCrosse and Enclave which are up 175 and 14 percent, respectively. (READ MORE)

GMC total sales through July are 28 percent higher than 2009. The brand’s retail sales have increased 30 percent yeartodate on the strength of the GMC Terrain, Sierra and Acadia – up 326 percent, 13 percent and 21 percent respectively. (READ MORE)

Total sales for Cadillac are up 46 percent for the year through July. Retail sales for the brand are 32 percent higher this year, with the all-new Cadillac SRX surging 487 percent – leading it to gain the most market share in the luxury crossover segment so far this year. (READ MORE)

Month-end dealer inventory in the U.S. stood at about 424,000 units, which is about 15,000 units below June 2010, and about 43,000 lower than July 2009.

That number is commonly tossed around by automotive manufacturers as the be-all-end-all sales target for a mainstream global vehicle. In fact, very few models have been able to achieve that kind of volume… well, ever!

But even before the (very mainstream and very global) Chevrolet Cruze becomes available to the biggest automotive market in the world come September, the bow tie compact has already been on sale in 60 countries around the world. And it’s been very successful as well, seeing average sales increase 18 percent per month.

During the first six months of 2010, the Cruze sold 140,000 units, which makes for a total of 270,000 copies since its launch in Europe and other markets worldwide. In fact, the total number of Cruzes sold under the Chevrolet, Daewoo, and Holden nameplates exceed 340,000 units.

Whether Chevrolet (and General Motors, of course) will be able to continue the success of the Cruze here in the U.S. is currently a question that has no answer. But we think the Cruze will do just fine here, thank you very much.

Chevrolet Cruze Sales Pass 270,000 as U.S. Introduction Nears
China, Russia Among 60 Countries to Embrace New Compact

DETROIT – Even before the first models reach U.S. dealers, the Chevrolet Cruze is among the fastest-growing nameplates in the world with sales rising an average of 18 percent per month.

Internationally, customers have purchased 140,000 Cruze in the first six months of 2010 and a total of 270,000 since Cruze launched in the spring of 2009 in Europe, followed by other major markets, such as China in summer of 2009.

Cruze is currently available in more than 60 countries, with China, Russia, Mexico, India and Spain as the top five sales markets. Including Holden and Daewoo versions sold in Australia and South Korea, total sales exceed 340,000 vehicles across five continents.

Cruze will begin arriving at U.S. dealerships in September. With U.S. models produced in Lordstown, Ohio, Cruze will be one of the few compact car built in the U.S. for 2011 model year. Production at the Lordstown complex will begin with three shifts, assembling Cruze models around the clock to meet expected customer demand.

“Customers around the world have already made Cruze an international success, setting the stage for it here in the U.S.,” said Margaret Brooks, director of marketing for Chevrolet small cars. “For U.S. customers, Cruze will be priced to compete with compact cars while offering more interior room, more miles per gallon in the Eco model, and more standard safety features.”

In the U.S., Cruze models will start at $16,995 for the LS model, equipped with the most standard safety features in its segment, including 10 air bags, StabiliTrak electronic stability control with rollover sensing, traction control and anti-lock brakes.

The Cruze Eco model starts at $18,895, featuring a standard 1.4L Ecotec turbo and six-speed manual transmission. With ultra low-rolling resistance tires, and an enhanced aerodynamic-performance package, Cruze Eco is expected to deliver 40 miles per gallon on the highway.

The top of the line Cruze LTZ model starts at $22,695 and features a standard six-way power driver seat, leather seating surfaces, cruise control, Bluetooth phone connectivity, USB port with audio interface, ultrasonic rear-parking assist, and 18-inch alloy wheels.

Most GM fans are very much aware that the reason the automotive Grim Reaper passed by Buick and left it unscathed is the brand’s tremendous success in China. In fact, the reason Buick is still around has nothing to do with its old man reputation in the States… if that were the deciding factor, we all know what would have happened. Luckily for Buick, the Chinese market is booming and the Tri-Shield brand is one of their favorite marques in the Middle Kingdom.

On that note, one of General Motors’ – and Buick’s – most acclaimed new models, the LaCrosse, is celebrating an important milestone very early in its lifetime in the Chinese market. Less than a year after its launch, the LaCrosse is already celebrating the milestone of having sold 100,000 units in China. In fact, the LaCrosse is the fastest growing model in the “premium upper-middle sedan” segment. During the first half of this year, the 3.0L SIDI variant (that has been discontinued in the U.S. market) made up nearly 80 percent of the segment (upper-medium sedans priced over RMB 300,000 – approximately $44,200 USD).

Introduced domestically in 2009, the LaCrosse has been praised for its stylish, high quality interior and unique, flowing exterior design. The car hosts advanced personal technology and new safety features. In the United States, the LaCrosse is now available with two powertrains. The base FWD CX and midlevel CXL come standard with the fuel efficient 2.4L 4-cylinder that boasts 19/30 MPG city/highway. Optional on the CXL and standard on the CXS is GM’s lauded 3.6L “high-feature” V6. This engine increases performance while still maintaining impressive economy at 17/27 MPG city/highway.

In China, the LaCrosse won the 2009 China Car of the Year and 2009 Champion Car of the Year, both prestigious and impressive awards. Domestically, the LaCrosse has also impressed by earning the IIHS (Insurance Institue for Highway Safety) Top Safety Pick Award and MotorWeek Drivers’ Choice Award for Best Luxury Sedan. LaCrosse was also one of the top ranked vehicles in Consumer Guide’s 2010 Best Buy and Recommended Awards.

The GM Authority Take

A vehicle with this much success in its first year on sale is bound for even greater success. The LaCrosse and Regal are taking the Buick brand in a completely new direction and it will be interesting (and very important) to see what other new things General Motors has in store for what used to be the old man’s brand.

View Press Release

Buick Sells 100,000th LaCrosse in China
Fastest-growing member of China’s premium upper-medium sedan segment
2010-07-26

Less than a year after its launch in China, sales of the new Buick LaCrosse have reached 100,000 units.

The LaCrosse is the fastest-growing member of China’s premium upper-medium sedan segment. In the first six months of 2010, the LaCrosse 3.0-liter SIDI model accounted for nearly 80 percent of the segment (upper-medium sedans priced over RMB 300,000, or roughly $44,200 USD).

The LaCrosse, which also was introduced as a redesigned model in the U.S. in 2009, has been recognized for its sculpted exterior styling and luxurious interior. It features a suite of advanced personal technologies and safety features that rate among the best in the industry.

In the U.S., LaCrosse offers a standard, fuel-efficient, direct injected Ecotec 2.4L four-cylinder engine in the CX and CXL FWD models. In fact, we gave the Traverse a perfect five-star score several weeks ago when it resided in the GM Authority Garage (our review here). And it looks like crossover buyers at large are taking note, since nearly two out of three Traverse and Equinox buyers in the United States traded in non-Chevrolet vehicles.

If you’re thinking that this number could include trades from other GM products, you’re right: nine percent of buyers traded in a Buick, GMC, or Cadillac. But consider that nearly half of Equinox and Traverse buyers traded in non-GM vehicles – 45 percent of Traverse and 44 percent of Equinox sales are to non-GM trades – and it’s clear just how well Chevy’s crossovers are selling.

Retaining Owners Of Discontinued Brands

What’s more, the two bow tie-wearing crossovers are helping Chevrolet retain owners of discontinued GM brands (read: Pontiac and Saturn): 11 percent traded in a product from a discontinued GM brand when buying the Equinox, while 9 percent did so while opting for the Traverse.

This is good news, as many observers were concerned about The General’s ability to keep Saturn, Pontiac, Hummer, or Saab owners in the GM family after the respective brands’ discontinuation last year.

Selling Like Hot Cakes

To further prove that Chevy’s crossovers are flying off dealer lots at a breakneck pace, Chevrolet has sold 120,000 Equinox and Traverse models in the first six months of 2010 – which represents an 80 percent increase calendar year-to-date.

“Equinox and Traverse are attracting owners of competitive vehicles, including Fords, Toyotas, and Hondas to Chevrolet showrooms,” said Alan Batey, vice president, Chevrolet Sales and Service. “For these buyers, Equinox and Traverse offer the flexibility and fuel efficiency they have been looking for in a crossover, as well as the design, performance and value that define Chevrolet.”

The GM Authority Take

While it’s great to see GM making inroads in the CUV space, we wonder whether The General could be even more successful if it took a few suggestions out of our playbook. Want to know what we mean? Click here and listen to the GM Authority Debate show where we focus on GM’s crossovers.

View Press Release

Nearly Two-Thirds of Equinox and Traverse Buyers New to Chevrolet
Brand Capturing Owners of Discontinued GM Marques and Non-GM Products
2010-07-30

DETROIT – Nearly two out of three buyers for the Chevrolet Equinox and Traverse have traded in non-Chevrolet vehicles so far this year. In addition, nearly half of buyers traded in a non-GM vehicle.

Cadillac, Buick, and GMC trade-ins account for only 9 percent of purchases for both vehicles. The crossovers are helping Chevrolet retain owners of discontinued GM brands, which were offered in 11 percent of Equinox trade-ins and 9 percent of Traverse trade-ins.

The remaining 45 percent of Traverse buyers and 44 percent of Equinox buyers traded in a non-GM vehicle.

Combined, Chevrolet sold more than 120,000 Equinox and Traverse models during the first six months of 2010 – an increase of approximately 80 percent calendar-year-to-date.

Introduced in late 2008 as an all-new model for 2009, Traverse is equipped with a 3.6L V-6 with direct injection and variable valve timing and six-speed automatic transmission. For front-wheel-drive models, Traverse delivers an EPA-estimated 24 mpg highway – more than any eight-passenger crossover.

Kelley Blue Book’s kbb.com named Traverse one of the Top 10 Best New Family Vehicles for 2009, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety named Traverse a 2009 Top Safety Pick, and Consumer’s Digest named Traverse a Best Buy for 2009 and 2010.

The 2010 Equinox was introduced as an all-new model in the summer of 2009. Equipped with the standard 2.4L Ecotec direct injected I-4 engine and six-speed automatic, the front-wheel-drive Equinox delivers a segment-best 32 mpg highway, according to EPA estimates.

Consumer’s Digest named Equinox a 2010 Best Buy, and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety named Equinox a 2010 Top Safety Pick. Since 2009, Chevrolet has announced three production increases for the Equinox to meet consumer demand.

The growth of Traverse and Equinox sales also solidified General Motors’ position as the leading automaker for crossover sales. Combined crossover sales for Chevrolet, Buick, Cadillac, and GMC increased 81 percent calendar-year-to-date, and have increased more than 30 percent for nine consecutive months.

In fact, GM is scrambling to meet demand for the midsize-compact CUV and is in the process of expanding capacity at its Ingersoll, Ontario, Canada plant – but more on that in a bit.

Increases In Average Transaction Prices

The average transaction price of the new-for-2010 Equinox is about $26,500, which is $4,800 higher than the outgoing model. According to Chevrolet General Manager Jim Campbell, it’s also $3,900 more than competing models. Apparently, the Equinox’s content, perceived value, and styling is “really resonating” with consumers, said Campbell.

Four Cylinder Most Popular Powerplant

More than 80 percent of Equinox buyers opt for the 2.4 liter four-cylinder ECOTEC engine (good for 182 hp, 172 lb.-ft. torque) as opposed to the optional V6 mill (that produces 264 hp, 222 lb.-ft. torque). Both engines are direct injected, available in front wheel- or all-wheel drive configurations, and are mated to GM’s six-speed automatic transmission.

For comparison’s sake, buyers of the Equinox’s brother, the GMC Terrain, favor the six-cylinder to the four-banger at a 60:40 ratio.

Increasing Production Capacity

GM is spending more than $90 million on an initiative to boost production of the Equinox and its platform mate, the GMC Terrain. The multi-phase project consists of a retool and a body shop upgrade to GM’s Ingersoll, Ontario assembly plant – a move that’s expected to boost output from 795 vehicles to 996 units a day by August 2.

The second phase entails shipping 300 Equinox body assemblies per day from Ingersoll to GM’s Oshawa, Ontario plant about an hour away, where the vehicles will undergo final assembly.

June sales of the Equinox increased by 179.7 percent compared to 2009 levels and GM can’t seem to get the Theta-based crossovers to consumers fast enough.

“If we could, we would – believe me,” Steve Carlisle, Vice President of product planning said during a sales briefing for analysts and journalists earlier in the month.

File this one into your statistics collection: Chevrolet dominates the automotive market in Uzbekistan, a country in Central Asia that was once part of the Soviet Union. According to Tim Lee, President of GM International Operations, the bow tie brand is responsible for 94 percent of the country’s car market. How did this come to be?

The short answer? Through a joint venture between Uzbekistan automaker UzAutoSanoat and GM Daewoo.

The pact began in 1996 between Daewoo and UzAutoSanoat. The General came into the picture in 2008, after Daewoo went bankrupt, causing UzAutoSanoat to take over the venture. After that, GM Daewoo and UzAutoSanoat created another joint venture called GM Uzbekistan. The operation now builds the Chevrolet Matiz, Lacetti, and Captiva in Uzbekistan. In case you were wondering – the first two are Chevy-badged Daewoos.

If only GM could work some of this magic in the U.S. market…

And yes, for the downers out there who aren’t capable of enjoying good news, we understand there’s some serious number “fudging” going on here. Nevertheless, it makes for a great headline!

Update: Here’s an update from GM Europe: for January through May of this year, Chevrolet sold 59,485 out of a total market of 63,220 vehicles (the market is car sales excluding light commercial vehicles). For the first five months of the year, Chevy nabbed 98.6 percent of the market. Bam!

The Cavalier was as “economy” as one could possibly get, while the recently out-of-production Cobalt wasn’t much better. Because of this, it goes without saying that we can’t wait for the all-new Chevrolet Cruze to go on sale. Not only is the Cruze very important for GM worldwide, it may be even more important for The General in Indonesia.

The Indonesian market represents a massive growth opportunity for General Motors at a time when our favorite automaker can use all the headway it can get. Indonesia is the world’s fourth largest country and accounted for the sale of 483,000 vehicles last year. While that may seem like a paltry amount, especially when compared to double-digit annual sales in the U.S. and Canada, analysts expect volume to reach 1.3 million units over the next five years – which equates to a 170 percent growth rate. GM, which only markets its Chevrolet brand in the country, was responsible for an insignificant 0.5 percent of the market. As such, it would like to control a larger slice of the Indonesian car pie, with hopes of reaching the 10 percent mark.

While expansion plans are unclear at the time of this writing, GM locals in Jakarta, the Indonesian capital, have said that the company is looking to reestablish a plant on the outskirts of the city. Tim Lee, President of GM International Operations, said that he is “very, very optimistic” about the opportunities in the country.

“A Very, Very Good Brand”

What’s more, General Motors is looking to capitalize on its reputation in Indonesia. One customer states that “Chevrolet is a very, very good brand. Every model is very good.” This is exactly the kind of image that GM wants for its brands all over the world and is the type of customer praise and encouragement that would cause more car shoppers to consider (and favor) GM products, resulting in a higher market share and a healthier bottom line. This customer recently purchased a Chevrolet Captiva for what is approximately $34,000 in his local currency (using current exchange rates). He bought the car for his growing family and financed the purchase, claiming that it was easy to find a loan.

Analysts expect the Indonesian automotive market to continue increasing as the nation’s political and economic environments stabilize. With industry volume hovering around 483,000 vehicles last year, growth is staggering compared to the 58,000 cars sold in 1998.

Most importantly, Indonesians associate the Chevrolet brand with quality and prestige, but also raised concerns about repair costs and the availability of parts compared to Toyota, the dominant brand in the country.

Growth and Competition

Speaking of parts and service, GM has 33 dealerships in Indonesia compared to Ford’s 35. And while Ford sold 6,477 vehicles there last year, GM only sold 2,616. However, GM sold 1,000 cars through the first quarter of 2010, acquiring 1 percent of the market, which points to the market’s tremendous growth opportunities and volatility.

GM’s Tom Lee continues, “we’re very underrepresented share-wise… we should be… at least 10%.” GM faces very strong competition from Toyota, which has 195 dealers and 58 percent of the market through the first quarter of 2010. Customers bought over 34,000 copies of the Toyota Avanza, a mini MPV, which is an increase of 62 percent compared to the same period last year. These results serve as an aspiration for GM in Indonesia.

Stabilization

As Indonesia’s political and economic environments continue to stabilize, the country’s market has grown in comparison to nearby Thailand, which previously was home to a much-stronger auto industry. According to the Freep, “Jim Castle, a Jackson native who is now a prominent consultant in Jakarta helping Western businesses operate in the country, expects consumers to purchase 650,000 cars this year.” This kind of growth is impressive and can be an important opportunity for General Motors.

The ease of financing, low interest rates, and a growing middle class are crucial to GM’s success in Indonesia. On the other hand, the lack of a developed infrastructure could inhibit expansionary efforts. Short trips on the country’s right-hand-drive streets can take hours due to insufficient and clogged roadways. The market can also be volatile, with 58,000 sales in 1998 and 387,000 the year before that.

J.D. Power expects that auto sales in Indonesia will continue their upward trend, with most of the growth concentrated in compact and midsize passenger car segments. The compact segment spiked 555 percent while the midsize segment shot up 422 percent in March 2010.

GM is working to expand its offerings in Indonesia and is bringing vehicles such as the Cruze and Captiva to market that appeal to young executives. Besides the Cruze and Captiva, Chevrolet offers the Aveo sedan (Kalos), Aveo 5 hatch, Optra Magnum (Daewoo Lacetti sedan), and Optra Wagon (Daewoo Lacetti wagon). Let’s hope The General acquires the 10 percent market share it’s shooting for… otherwise, it wouldn’t really be as global company as it hopes to be. Perhaps Indonesia (or the region of Oceania where the country is located) is due for its own geographic division analogous to the recently-created GM South America?
