General Motors is vehemently gearing up for the late September launch of the Chevrolet Cruze and, in preparing for the uber-important event, is encouraging its 3,000 Chevrolet dealers to purchase competitive vehicles for head-to-head comparisons.

According to Chevrolet small car director Margaret Brooks, the goal is to give buyers the ability to immediately measure the Cruze against segment leaders such as the Toyota Corolla and Honda Civic.

The comparison, part of GM’s May The Best Car Win philosophy and marketing campaign, is reminiscent of the Test Drive Studio initiative established by The General earlier in the year. At this point, it is unclear how the two efforts will coexist, if at all.

Ad Blitz

What’s more, Chevrolet is planning for a major advertising and marketing blitz for the Cruze, details of which will be available shortly. Chevrolet didn’t comment on the size and budget of the campaign.

Cruze-In

Already on sale in 60 countries all over the world, the Cruze is GM’s first truly global vehicle that was engineered from the ground up to be built and sold all over the world. It features more shoulder room than both the Corolla and Civic and has a truly awesome exterior coupled with a modern and practical interior.

While the Cruze has yet to undergo U.S. crash test ratings, the Delta II-based Chevy was awarded top honors in European front- and side-crash test ratings. It contains ten airbags and The General even went the extra mile to include sound-deadening glass – a feature that’s unheard of in the mainstream compact segment. With all that in mind – the Cruze will be available in the regular Chevrolet trim levels as well as two special models – the RS and Eco. It starts at a mere $16,995 in the U.S. – including destination. What more do you need (or want)?

And for those who have not yet seen the upcoming Cruze hatchback, things will only get better for the Cruze line!

Here’s a problem you want to have: what to do when the market can’t get enough of your product and you’re on a budget? Well, if you’re smart, you get crafty. And General Motors has done just that with its Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain crossover vehicles.

With the CAMI plant in Ingersoll, Ontario already running three shifts with maximum overtime and not quite enough time and money to add shifts to other plants, nor to consider reactivating a dormant one, there was little else to do. So, GM had to figure out a solution that held the combination of being effective, affordable and could be done in a pinch. What they came up with is pretty good.

Turns out there was enough space in the Ingersoll plant for trucks to dock in, load up a full trailer of five Terrain and Equinox bodies, and shuttle them two and a half hours away to Oshawa, where paint and final assembly will take place. This method allows for an additional capacity of 60,000-80,000 Terrain and Equinox models to be assembled and shipped off to product-thirsty Chevrolet and GMC dealers.

The General has been doing this since March, but we have to wonder whether there’s a more stable long-term solution in the works. Any takers?

View Press Release

Traverse City, Mich. – When you’ve got hot-selling crossovers like the Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain and you’re out of room to make more, it takes creativity and flexibility to solve the challenge, General Motors Vice President of Manufacturing and Labor Diana Tremblay said Monday.

“Although we knew these were great products and that they’d be a hit in the marketplace, we really didn’t anticipate the degree to which the market positively responded,” she said at the 2010 Center for Automotive Research Management Briefing Seminars.

What to do?

Add a shift or overtime? Been there. Done that. The CAMI plant in Ingersoll, Ontario, is already working three shifts a day and maximum overtime.

Build a new plant? It would take too long and do nothing to meet the immediate customer demand for more Equinox and Terrains.

What about adding capacity at another plant? Again, it would take too long.

The solution? Invest in unused space in the CAMI Body Shop and use existing capacity in the Oshawa (Ontario) Paint Shop and Final Assembly. The low-cost solution was doable in six to eight months and created capacity for 60,000 to 80,000 more vehicles.

When the shuttle is fully operational, three trucks carrying five bodies each will leave CAMI hourly around the clock for the 2 1-2-hour drive to the Toronto suburb of Oshawa.

“We are starting production now,” Tremblay said. “This was a very fast solution in a very short time frame.”

Chevrolet and GMC dealers reported more than 16,000 Equinox and Terrain deliveries in June – up 208 percent over June 2009. For the year through June, sales of these vehicles were up almost 193 percent, to more than 94,000 sales.

The August numbers are in… and they’re not as great as they were for the last several months. General Motors saw a drop in sales of 24.9 percent in the U.S. compared to the same month a year ago, when the Cash for Clunkers program was in full stride, having ended August 24, 2009.

With a 21.4 percent drop, Chevrolet was responsible for much of the decline in August 2010. The bow tie brand is currently responsible for approximately 70 percent of The General’s U.S. sales volume. And since Chevy vehicles were perfect candidates for the Clunkers incentive, we believe that it’s not much of a surprise that we’re seeing a decline.

On a positive (and perhaps more important) note, Cadillac sales jumped 83.1 percent, Buick shot up 66 percent, and GMC gained 14.1 percent.

Altogether, sales of GM’s four core brands fell 10 percent and the remainder of the sales slide was the result of the discontinuation of the Hummer, Pontiac, and Saturn brands as well as the sale of Saab.

The GM Authority Take

No-one likes (or wants) to hear about declining sales, but such is reality. At the end of the day, this is really no big deal: Cash for Clunkers moved a lot of units and helped GM sales considerably – making it difficult to beat those sales numbers last month. It’s even more difficult to do so when Chevrolet hasn’t received any new models since the Cash for Clunkers period. Let’s wait ’til August 2011 to make our final decisions about this. By that time, the all-important Cruze and hotly-anticipated Volt will have hit the market and had their fair chance to stir up Chevy’s sales.

Stay tuned throughout the day as we release our coveted By The Numbers series, where we break out model-by-model sales of each GM brand.

Though it is one of the select few states in which the Volt will initially be launched, things have been far from smooth. One of the latest biggies is the recent unearthing of an undisclosed Chevy dealer representative sending out an email that reads:

Hello *****

Thank you for your online request, as you know the Volt is going to be a very limited production vehicle for the first 2-3 years. Demand is going to far exceed supply for this vehicle, initially our asking price for the Volt is going to be MSRP plus $20,000, we are expecting only receive 9 Volts all of next year.

I will keep you in my customer base for when the Volt comes out and I will contact you with any information as I receive it. We are taking orders right now for the Volt, if you would like more information, please let me know and I will be more than happy to help you. Thank you.

***** *****, Internet Specialist
******* Chevrolet
********, CA

Though it should be noted that the dealer in question sent the letter just before The General’s announcement of a 50 percent production increase for the Volt for 2011, it doesn’t change the fact that GM has been discouraging this type of price gouging from the get-go:

“We also aren’t expecting our dealers to overcharge anyone for this vehicle, either, and will monitor the situation closely when we launch… we’ll be paying close attention when the vehicle launches and do our best to strongly discourage this kind of behavior, as we always do with any GM-branded vehicle,” said an official GM spokesperson.

So far, there hasn’t been any word on whether the dealer has been dealt with or if they are a part of the Ft. Lauderdale-based AutoNation dealer network, who had one or two things to say about any dealer with the gull to do this. We’ll be following this one very closely.

Alas, that’s not the case, since Rally Auto Group of Palmdale, California is not giving up without a fight.

Before GM’s decision to decrease its dealer count by nearly 2,000 stores, Rally carried The General’s Chevrolet, Cadillac, Buick, Pontiac, and GMC brands. However, the arbiter in Rally’s case decided to give its Chevy franchise to a nearby Saturn store, allowing Rally to continue selling the Cadillac, Buick, and GMC brands.

According to Rally, the arbiter erred in splitting the franchises: under the dealer arbitration law passed by Congress last year, the judge should have either kept the whole dealership intact or ordered the entire operation to be closed completely.

As of this writing, Rally Auto Group is the only GM dealer to sue in the aftermath of the dealer arbitration process. You can bet we’ll be following this one closely.

New And Improved Facilities

GM’s revamped stores are participating in a major facilities upgrade program in order to align with GM’s new dealer branding guidelines. More than 300 upgrades have already been completed and 1,000 projects are scheduled through the end of 2010.

The initiative, which began in October 2009, is accelerating – with nearly 100 dealerships upgrading their stores every month. Major elements of the image upgrades include work areas with power outlets for phones and portable computers, Wi-Fi access, and a café with refreshments.

GM is also updating or installing new signs at Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, and Cadillac dealerships across the country. The signs include a contemporary design and reflect the current image guidelines for each of the four core brands.

“Customers throughout the country will be seeing a new look at the Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac dealerships in their communities,” said President of GM North America Mark Reuss. “Putting our new dealer network in place is one of the most important elements in the rebirth of GM.”

Smaller But Still The Biggest

With 4,500 dealerships, GM’s dealer network is 25 percent smaller than that of early 2009, which was consisted of 6,049 stores. Compared to the previous network that sold 87 brand combinations, the new dealer body has dropped that number down to 15. This decreases complexity, provides greater operating efficiencies, and increased dealer throughput and profitability – all while providing existing and potential GM customers choice and convenience.

“Our dealers are the face of GM to our customers and valued members of the communities where they do business across America,” said Reuss. “We’re confident our dealer network will be the best in the business. It will be the right size with the right dealers to give our customers great service during and after the purchase.”

However, we must point out that even though GM has a reduced dealer count, our favorite automaker still faces similar potential problems when it did with 6,000+ dealerships. A bloated dealer network encourages cross shopping, making GM dealers in the same area/community compete for the same customer. Traditionally, this has lead to lower sale prices, killing dealer profits and resulting in lower vehicle resale values. What’s more, decreased profits rob dealers of other opportunities, such as facility upgrades and employee training programs, to name a few.

Higher Emphasis On Customer Care

Even though General Motors dealers historically rank near the top or above the industry average for customer service and sales satisfaction by third-party sources, Reuss noted that the new dealer network would be even more focused on being an industry leader in customer care.

The Backstory

GM offered wind-down agreements to 2,064 Chevy, Buick, GMC, and Cadillac dealers that it determined needed to transition one or more of those brands from the network by October 31, 2001 (coinciding with the running out of the dealer agreement). However, The General hit a legislative roadblock due to federal law passed in December of 2009.

Under the new law, General Motors dealers filed 1,176 arbitration cases with the American Arbitration Association to have their dealer agreements reinstated. Out of those 1,176, only 62 arbitration cases were completed.

GM sent out 702 Letters of Intent to involved dealers which granted them the permission to conduct normal operations as soon as they comply with the terms of the letter. GM has reached 408 individual resolutions with other dealers, most of which call for the dealer to continue the wind down process.

“We spent a considerable amount of time and effort to work toward a mutually agreeable resolution with our dealers,” Reuss said. “We’re pleased that we could complete this process in what we believe is an effective and efficient manner.

GM Confirms New Dealer Network
Structured to provide best retail experience and create positive, lasting customer relationships
2010-08-05

DETROIT – General Motors today announced that it has concluded the dealer arbitration process and that effective Nov. 1, it will have a network of about 4,500 U.S. dealerships to sell and service customers for Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac vehicles.

The company also reported that many of these dealerships are participating in a major facilities upgrade program, with more than 300 updates already completed and about 1,000 projects scheduled through the end of 2010.

“Our dealers are the face of GM to our customers and valued members of the communities where they do business across America,” said Mark Reuss, president, GM North America. “We’re confident our dealer network will be the best in the business. It will be the right size with the right dealers to give our customers great service during and after the purchase.

“A strong, profitable dealer network selling and servicing the world’s best cars and trucks is a genuine market advantage,” Reuss said.

Although GM’s new dealer network is about 25 percent smaller than in early 2009, it remains the nation’s largest. This gives existing and potential GM customers more choice and convenience when it comes to where to buy a car and have it serviced.

“We spent a considerable amount of time and effort to work toward a mutually agreeable resolution with our dealers,” Reuss said. “We’re pleased that we could complete this process in what we believe is an effective and efficient manner.”

During its restructuring last year, GM offered wind-down agreements to 2,064 Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac dealers that the company determined needed to transition one or more of those brands from the dealer network by Oct. 31, 2010, when the dealer agreement expires.

Under the provisions of a federal law passed in December, 2009, GM dealers filed 1,176 arbitration cases with the American Arbitration Association to have their dealer agreements reinstated. Only 62 arbitration cases were completed with decisions rendered. GM offered 702 Letters of Intent to involved dealers, allowing them to conduct normal dealer operations as soon as they comply with the terms of the Letter of Intent. GM has reached 408 individual resolutions with other dealers, most of which call for the dealer to continue the wind-down process. Four cases were dismissed.

In June, 2009, GM had 6,049 dealerships selling eight brands, with 87 brand combinations. The new dealer body will be much simpler, with about 4,500 dealerships, with just 15 brand combinations and four brands. This provides greater operating efficiencies and increased dealer throughput and profitability, enabling dealers to reinvest in their businesses to better satisfy customers.

Reuss noted that while GM dealers traditionally rank near the top or above the industry average for customer service and sales satisfaction by third-party sources, the new network GM is putting in place would be even more focused on being an industry leader in customer care.

Dealership upgrades

GM dealerships across the country are updating their Chevrolet, Buick-GMC and Cadillac facilities to align with new branding guidelines. This initiative, which began in October, 2009, is accelerating; dealerships are now upgrading their stores at the rate of about 100 per month. Major elements of the image upgrades include customer-friendly features such as work areas with phone and lap top computer power outlets, Wi-Fi and a café area with refreshments.

To support this effort, GM is updating or installing new signs at Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac dealerships across the U.S. The signs feature a more contemporary design and reflect the current image guidelines for each brand.

“Customers throughout the country will be seeing a new look at the Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac dealerships in their communities,” Reuss said. “Putting our new dealer network in place is one of the most important elements in the rebirth of GM.”

It looks like we’re not the only ones excited about the upcoming Chevy Volt: Chevrolet dealers are also waiting in great anticipation for the E-REV’s arrival later this year. But when the Volt hits dealer lots, it may not be all butterflies and roses, since some Chevrolet dealers may be planning to gouge Volt buyers by increasing the purchase price of the vehicle.

A responsible dealer chain, however, is putting the kibosh on the price gouging ordeal: AutoNation, the largest new automotive dealer group in the United States with 230 dealerships in 15 states, has issued an ultimatum to its Chevrolet dealers. Speaking with Edmunds, AutoNation’s head of communications and public policy, Marc Cannon, said that AutoNation has sent its 27 Chevy dealers a notice regarding Volt pricing.

According to Cannon, the maximum price for which an AutoNation Chevrolet dealer will be able to sell a Volt will be the equivalent of the vehicle’s MSRP plus any dealer-installed options. Just in case a dealer or its employee decides to take its chances with the Volt’s price and violate the policy in question, the employee(s) in question will be terminated.

The GM Authority Take

Is this a bit extreme? Maybe. But with such tremendous demand for the Volt, consumers – especially early adopters – will pay almost anything to get their hands on the bow tie-wearin’ EREV. This is something that was eloquently illustrated by GM Authority’s own Hylton Jorssen in his article here.

W think AutoNation is on the right track here. Perhaps it can be something General Motors itself could look into and apply to all Volt certified dealers. The terms of service would read something like, “Increase the MSRP of the Chevrolet Volt, lose your Volt certification.” It can be as simple as that. No “legaleze” needed.

The numbers are in, folks. General Motors has sold 199,692 vehicles in July, representing a 5.4 percent increase compared to the same time period a year ago.

Excluding the brands that GM has either sold (Saab) or shut down (Pontiac, Saturn, Hummer), sales rose a healthy 25 percent. Here are the results from each brand (year-over-year):

Chevrolet sales up 32.5 percent

Buick sales up 52.7 percent

Cadillac sales up 39.1 percent

GMC sales up 45 percent

GM is now manufacturing closer to real market demand and has been able to significantly reduce costs by offering less rebates and discounted financing. This allows The General’s vehicles to sell closer to sticker price, something we expect to see in GM’s Q3 fiscal results come August 10.

However, GM saw a decline in consumer confidence in July:

“Consumer confidence declined in July,” said Don Johnson, vice president, U.S. sales operations. “But those people who have put off replacing their worn out vehicles are starting to come back into the market.”

According to GM, incentives ran 10.6 percent of average selling price in the first seven months of 2010 and our favorite automaker has also seen an increase in average transaction prices, which are – by the way – the highest in the industry.

“Year-to-date through July our average transaction prices are up $3,300 per vehicle over last year,” Johnson said.

Stay tuned for our famous By The Numbers series, where we break down brand-by-brand and model-by-model sales, coming up shortly.

Chevrolet-Buick-GMC-Cadillac Sales Up 25 Percent in July
2010-08-03

Steady progress in rebuilding sales one year after launch of new GM

Calendar-year-to-date sales for GM’s four brands up 31 percent

Tenth month in a row that GM’s four brands have increased retail and total sales

Strong Buick and Cadillac sales show balance of GM brand portfolio

DETROIT – July sales for Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac increased by a combined 25 percent to 199,432 units. Buick and Cadillac brands each sold more than twice as many vehicles in July, compared with the same month a year ago.

July marks the 10th straight month in which total and retail sales for GM’s brands increased year-over-year, demonstrating the continued strengthening of each brand in the marketplace as GM continues to rebuild momentum a year after its launch as a new company.

“When we say we want to design, build and sell the world’s best vehicles, we’re not talking about just one vehicle, one brand, or one month,” said Don Johnson, vice president, U.S. Sales Operations. “Our July results again reflect that each of our brands has contributed significantly to our gains.

“The size and scope of the U.S. market demands a strong portfolio of well-targeted brands,” Johnson said. “The success of Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, and Cadillac month in and month out, indicates that the new GM’s brand strategy is sound.”

Buick sold 16,799 vehicles in July, a 137-percent increase over last year. Cadillac delivered 14,919 units, up 142 percent over July last year. These are the highest sales totals for the two brands since August 2008. Chevrolet total sales in July increased 12 percent compared to July last year, and GMC total sales were up 27 percent compared with the same month last year.

GM’s newest vehicles including Chevrolet Camaro and Equinox, Buick LaCrosse and Regal, GMC Terrain, and Cadillac SRX, CTS Coupe and CTS Wagon continue to contribute significant sales gains. Total combined sales for these vehicles were up 77 percent in July and are up 211 percent yeartodate.

GM further strengthened its position as the industry leader in crossover sales. Total combined sales in July for the Chevrolet Equinox, HHR and Traverse, Buick Enclave, GMC Terrain and Acadia, and Cadillac SRX increased 41 percent in July and have risen 73 percent so far this year.

Combined total sales for GM’s full-size pickups, the Chevrolet Silverado and Avalanche, and the GMC Sierra, were up 22 percent during the month, with year-to-date sales 14 percent higher than a year ago.

Year-To-Date Gains Reflect Balanced Contribution of Brands

Year-to-date total sales for GM’s four brands have risen 31 percent to 1,269,009 units, while retail sales for GM’s brands have risen 18 percent – outpacing the industry.

“Our four brands have sold 125,210 more vehicles this year than our former company sold with eight brands during the same period last year,” Johnson said. “This gain has been a result of solid consumer demand across our lineup of cars, trucks, and crossovers.”

Chevrolet has led the increase with total sales 28 percent higher through July, compared to 2009. Retail sales for Chevrolet have increased 12 percent for the year, propelled by the strong retail sales of the Chevrolet Malibu, Camaro, Silverado, Equinox, and Traverse, which are up a combined 33 percent for the year. (READ MORE)

Buick remains one of the industry’s fastest-growing brands, with total sales 60 percent higher than 2009 through July. In the first seven months of the year, retail sales of Buicks have increased 41 percent on the strength of LaCrosse and Enclave which are up 175 and 14 percent, respectively. (READ MORE)

GMC total sales through July are 28 percent higher than 2009. The brand’s retail sales have increased 30 percent yeartodate on the strength of the GMC Terrain, Sierra and Acadia – up 326 percent, 13 percent and 21 percent respectively. (READ MORE)

Total sales for Cadillac are up 46 percent for the year through July. Retail sales for the brand are 32 percent higher this year, with the all-new Cadillac SRX surging 487 percent – leading it to gain the most market share in the luxury crossover segment so far this year. (READ MORE)

Month-end dealer inventory in the U.S. stood at about 424,000 units, which is about 15,000 units below June 2010, and about 43,000 lower than July 2009.
