Starting September 7, we will begin seeing ads for the all-new Chevrolet Cruze. Four of the 30-second spots will be voiced by the very recognizable tone of Tim Allen.

Best known for his starring roles on the show Home Improvement as well as the Toy Story movies, voicing Buzz Lightyear, Allen could possibly steal the spotlight from the cars. According GM’s vice president of marketing Joel Ewanick, however, the stars of the ads will still be the cars.

Allen, who grew up in the suburbs of Detroit, is a well known automotive enthusiast who happens to be a Western Michigan University alum.

Will Allen also narrate the upcoming Chevrolet Superbowl ads? Only time will tell…

In other news, Howie Long is still missing.

Tim Allen to be the Voice of Chevrolet

2010-09-03

* Actor’s Voice to be Prominent in Television Advertising
* Debuts Sept. 7 in TV Spots for the All-New Chevrolet Cruze

DETROIT – Television and movie star Tim Allen will be the voice of Chevrolet, beginning with the TV advertising for the all-new 2011 Chevrolet Cruze. The first ads for the Cruze will air next Tuesday, Sept. 7, Chevrolet announced today.

“Tim Allen brings the right combination of a recognizable voice with the credibility, likeability and humor that will connect with viewers,” said Joel Ewanick, vice president, U.S. marketing, General Motors. “His passion for all things cars makes him the perfect match for the Chevrolet brand.”

Allen is best known for his work in television’s “Home Improvement” and movies including the “Toy Story” trilogy, as the voice of Buzz Lightyear, and “The Santa Clause” franchise. He is a native of the Detroit area and has a long-standing love affair with automobiles.

Allen has an extensive car collection, including personally designed versions of a 1996 Chevrolet LT5 Impala SS, a 2000 Cadillac DeVille DTSi.

“Everyone knows Tim Allen is a ‘car guy’ with Michigan roots,” said Debbie Crispin, owner, Bill Crispin Chevrolet of Saline, Mich. “What a great voice for Chevrolet.”

Allen will debut in the advertising for the all-new Chevrolet Cruze, which will use accolades from the news media and comparisons to competitive cars in the compact segment to introduce the Cruze to the marketplace. These ads will be followed by additional television ads with a large social media component, product integration in relevant shows and events, as well as advertising specific to the features and benefits of the Cruze.

“Tim Allen will be the voice in our Cruze advertising, but the car will be the star,” Ewanick said. “Our communication on the Cruze will highlight the car, its features and its competitive advantages.”

Advertising will ramp up later this fall, as the Cruze begins arriving in volume at dealerships.

The TV ads were produced by Goodby, Silverstein and Partners and include four :30 second spots.

The Cruze offers the spaciousness and amenities of a midsize car with the fuel economy of a compact. The Cruze also affirms Chevrolet’s commitment to building refined, fuel-efficient vehicles using new, small-displacement, four-cylinder engines. The Ecotec 1.4L I-4 turbo with variable valve timing received an Environmental Protection Agency fuel economy rating of 26 miles per gallon in city driving and 36 mpg on the highway for the manual transmission and 22/35 for the automatic. The Cruze Eco model launching later this year is expected to get 40 mpg on the highway.

The folks at Saturn decided took the hot hatch to California, covered up the badges, and asked passersbys what vehicle they were looking at. Most, of course, thought it was a Toyota or Honda, with one loony guy believing it was a Dodge!

The Saturn-badged Opel Astra was a cool little car that was fun and economical at the same time – a combination that has become quite rare nowadays. Nevertheless, this particular writer hopes that Chevrolet will make a three-door hatchback version of the Cruze five-door that will get its official debut in Paris. Anyone else hoping for a three-door Cruze?

Just a few days ago, we showed you spy photos of the next-generation Chevrolet Malibu (our rendering above). Now, we’ve found out that the all-new Malibu will exclusively use four-cylinder engines – at least in in North America, eliminating the option of a six-cylinder powerplant.

While unexpected, the move to physically downsize the engine lineup of the most popular Chevrolet sedan makes sense, especially in light of new CAFE standards that are set to take effect in 2012 and last though 2016. More than anything, the decision underscores GM’s strengthened commitment to fuel economy.

While we aren’t privy to the actual four cylinder mills that will make their way into the new Epsilon II-based Malibu, we expect to see all the four-cylinder ECOTEC choices found in the Buick Regal, including the direct injected 2.4 liter LAF/LE9, the 2.0L low-output turbo (220 hp, 260 lbs.-ft. tq.) and the LNF high-output 2.0L turbo (260 hp, 260 lbs.-ft. tq.). A mild hybrid version of the ‘Bu will be offered as well.

What’s more, we’ve heard whispers that GM is working on an all-new 2.5 liter naturally-aspirated four cylinder ECOTEC, but this powerplant has not been confirmed at this time.

For those concerned about the availability of a six-cylinder engine in larger Chevrolet sedans, fear not: the next-gen Chevy Impala is rumored to offer a choice of six-cylinder engines, including the high-feature V6 (280 hp) and upcoming twin-turbo LF3. The latter may produce upwards of 350 horsepower and would match the power output of a V8 while attaining much better fuel economy.

Since we’ve speculated about the model’s arrival in the last few weeks, this news does not come as much of a shocker – but it doesn’t ice down the fact that this C-segment wagon looks hot. White hot.

Though General Motors is describing the unveiled version as a “show car” (meaning it’s somewhere in the middle between a concept and production version), the production model will see very few changes when it finally hits the streets. Expect the strings of LED lights on the lower front fascia and blue brake calipers to disappear. However, something that won’t go away will be the 400 L (14 cu.ft.) of total cargo space.

In Europe, hatchbacks make up around 65 percent of the entire compact market, which makes up 4.8 million vehicles across the board. Therefore, it’s easy to see why GM Europe will get the Cruze hatch first. Let’s hope for its eventual arrival in North America.

View Press Release

New hatchback is next chapter in Cruze success story

- Hatchback show car to be unveiled at Paris Motor Show
- New model will build on Cruze sedan’s global appeal
- Cruze hatchback cements Chevrolet’s mainstream credentials in Europe
- One of four Chevrolet premieres in Paris

The story of the Chevrolet Cruze goes from strength to strength with the latest chapter heralding the launch of a new 5-door hatchback model, further evidence of Chevrolet’s intention to bring value for money to all mainstream segments in Europe.

A show car version of Chevrolet’s compact contender will be seen for the first time at the Paris Motor Show, on September 30. It will be one of four world Chevrolet premieres at the show.

With the introduction of the new Cruze hatchback, customers have an alternative body style to the traditional sedan and Chevrolet has raised the bar again with a vehicle that brings new levels of value against some of the more established competition.

According to Wayne Brannon, president and managing director of Chevrolet Europe, the potential for meeting further customer demand is significant. “Cruze is turning out to be a real success story. We are selling it in 70 countries around the world and it has recently surpassed the Aveo as our top selling passenger car nameplate globally.

“Hatchbacks play a critical role in many markets. The total compact segment in Europe represents around 4.8 million units which is over a quarter of the total market, with hatchbacks representing around 65% of that volume. We therefore expect to see increased business in a number of regions, while sending out a signal that Chevrolet is now a serious mainstream player in Europe.”

Since its launch in the spring 2009, the Cruze sedan has been warmly welcomed by markets all over the world, greeted as a step change for the brand with customers attracted to its coupe style, build quality, 5-star NCAP rating and driving dynamics. It was also elected the AUTOBEST car of 2010 by a jury of leading auto writers in Central and Eastern Europe.

The Chevrolet Cruze is a car particularly well suited to European driver tastes, a fact borne out by sales success across many of markets. So far in 2010, Cruze tops the compact sedan sales charts in many of the larger European markets including Denmark, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Spain, Portugal and the U.K., where it is exceeding forecasted sales.

Outside of Europe, Cruze’s sales momentum is equally evident. In China alone, Chevrolet has sold nearly 90,000 Cruze since the start of the year, while the sedan is also selling well in Russia, parts of South America, and in India and other emerging markets.

Hatchback design

With its attractive sweeping coupe roofline and short overhangs at both the front and rear, the new Cruze hatchback has the same dynamic ‘stance’ as the sedan and will be instantly recognizable. It will benefit too from the same taut body ‘feel’ on the road, being built using the new body-frame integral system (BFI) which is complemented by the final tuning to chassis components. The BFI system results in high levels of stability and solidity.

Cargo capacity for the Cruze hatchback is close to 400 liters and will feature 60/40 split rear seating.

Chevrolet’s participation in the World Touring Car Championship with the Cruze is also currently paying great dividends. With four races left in the season, it currently leads both the drivers’ and team championships while also showcasing the dynamic qualities of the car to great effect.

The new Chevrolet Cruze 5-door hatchback will go on sale across Europe mid 2011 with prices announced nearer the launch date.

Due to launch in October, GM will make light of the fact that – for ages – customers have put bumper stickers on their Chevys with a child urinating on the Ford logo (and vice versa).

Ewanick said the ads would use “interesting, creative and funny ways to take advantage of the fact that there’s really the Hatfields and McCoys.” He also said that the campaign will span television, print as well as online media and admitted that the theme’s inspiration was the gatherings of his own family where members would give one another a hard time about their rival truck brands.

Ewanick was the head of marketing at Hyundai Motor America for three years before coming to Nissan and staying there from March through May 2010. He arrived at GM about three months ago and has been impressing upon his new employees that the relationship between the truck owner and his/her truck brand should be used in campaigns.

Howie Long, the longtime Chevrolet spokesperson and former NFL defensive lineman, will not be in the ads. The commercials will instead feature another well-known personality.

These will be the last series of ads to be done by Campbell-Ewald, which is being replaced by Goodby, Silverstein & Partners of San Francisco as Chevy’s ad agency of record.

Even though sales of passenger cars have been on a downturn in recent years, the Detroit Three still command 81.8 percent of the pickup truck market. This is an increase of a half percent since the same period last year. Silverado sales have increased by 13 percent since July 2009 and Ford’s F-Series trucks were up 35 percent. The American car market improved by 15 percent as a whole over the first 7 months of 2010 compared to the same period of time in 2009.

Here’s a problem you want to have: what to do when the market can’t get enough of your product and you’re on a budget? Well, if you’re smart, you get crafty. And General Motors has done just that with its Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain crossover vehicles.

With the CAMI plant in Ingersoll, Ontario already running three shifts with maximum overtime and not quite enough time and money to add shifts to other plants, nor to consider reactivating a dormant one, there was little else to do. So, GM had to figure out a solution that held the combination of being effective, affordable and could be done in a pinch. What they came up with is pretty good.

Turns out there was enough space in the Ingersoll plant for trucks to dock in, load up a full trailer of five Terrain and Equinox bodies, and shuttle them two and a half hours away to Oshawa, where paint and final assembly will take place. This method allows for an additional capacity of 60,000-80,000 Terrain and Equinox models to be assembled and shipped off to product-thirsty Chevrolet and GMC dealers.

The General has been doing this since March, but we have to wonder whether there’s a more stable long-term solution in the works. Any takers?

View Press Release

Traverse City, Mich. – When you’ve got hot-selling crossovers like the Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain and you’re out of room to make more, it takes creativity and flexibility to solve the challenge, General Motors Vice President of Manufacturing and Labor Diana Tremblay said Monday.

“Although we knew these were great products and that they’d be a hit in the marketplace, we really didn’t anticipate the degree to which the market positively responded,” she said at the 2010 Center for Automotive Research Management Briefing Seminars.

What to do?

Add a shift or overtime? Been there. Done that. The CAMI plant in Ingersoll, Ontario, is already working three shifts a day and maximum overtime.

Build a new plant? It would take too long and do nothing to meet the immediate customer demand for more Equinox and Terrains.

What about adding capacity at another plant? Again, it would take too long.

The solution? Invest in unused space in the CAMI Body Shop and use existing capacity in the Oshawa (Ontario) Paint Shop and Final Assembly. The low-cost solution was doable in six to eight months and created capacity for 60,000 to 80,000 more vehicles.

When the shuttle is fully operational, three trucks carrying five bodies each will leave CAMI hourly around the clock for the 2 1-2-hour drive to the Toronto suburb of Oshawa.

“We are starting production now,” Tremblay said. “This was a very fast solution in a very short time frame.”

Chevrolet and GMC dealers reported more than 16,000 Equinox and Terrain deliveries in June – up 208 percent over June 2009. For the year through June, sales of these vehicles were up almost 193 percent, to more than 94,000 sales.

And while we know GM’s new twin-turbo LF3 will make its way into future Lambda vehicles, the powerplant transplant won’t happen until at least 2013.

Coincidentally, the most recent GM Authority Weekly podcast delivered a very interesting discussion about GM’s various platforms, including the Lambda, Theta, and Epsilon (be sure to listen to the show here). But one of the more intriguing parts of the conversation centered around the Lambda architecture, with Autoblog’s Sam Abuelsamid explaining that a V8 engine is a definite “no-no” for Lambda-based vehicles.

As it turns out, the engine compartment of the Lambda platform is exceptionally narrow and a GM pushrod V8 simply wouldn’t fit.

What’s more, Sam was also told that GM’s two-mode hybrid system won’t become available in Lambda-based crossovers any time soon: the engineers cited transmission-related space constraints of the Lambda platform. Interestingly, the gearbox in question would fit into a Theta-based Saturn Vue… but not a larger Lambda vehicle.

The GM Authority Take

Needless to say, we find this news to be somewhat disheartening. Not only is the Lambda architecture not very flexible, but the next-gen Cadillac Escalade will most likely ride on the Lambda platform as well. And given the addiction of Escalade owners to their burly V8s, we’re not sure that the move to a six cylinder mill will satisfy the customers in the long haul.

In 1935, the Chevrolet Suburban was born out of the idea that consumers needed a heavy-duty, truck-based station wagon that provided incredible utility. Three-quarters of a century later, it has remained just that. Earlier this year, Chevrolet unveiled the 75th Anniversary Diamond Edition Chevrolet Suburban to commemorate all of the years it has been on the road.

When the Suburban first hit the market in 1935 – it was a very different time for the United States. The total population was only 127 million and first-class stamps were only 3 cents. There were no import brands from Japan, let alone competitive Korean cars, and the word “hybrid” was hardly used in the English language. It was a different time in the U.S. and an even more drastically different time for the automotive industry. In the interim, the Suburban became an icon as the entire industry’s longest-running nameplate, having a longer lifeline than entire brands such as Volkswagen and Toyota.

Throughout the early 1930s, most manufacturers offered only car-based wagons for professional use. Open models, known as depot hacks, were used to transport people and cargo around train stations and boat yards. Enclosed models typically did not have rear seats and were called “sedan deliveries”. Since wood and canvas were used for the bodies and roof, the car-based chassis and bodies were quite damage-prone. This compromised their effectiveness and durability, so Chevrolet saw fit to start work on an all-steel wagon body atop a commercial chassis. Thus, the Chevrolet Suburban Carryall was born.

The original Suburban had seating for 8, had a 75 inch-long and a 77 inch-high cargo bay. Today’s latest model can seat up to 9 and is capable of holding an immense 137.4 cubic feet of cargo with the second row of seats folded and the third row removed.

Originally priced at $675 ($10,900 in 2010 dollars), the Suburban was a steal. However, the origional model did not have the modern amenities that we’ve become accustomed to, including heated seats, OnStar, dual front and side airbags, ABS, stability control, keyless entry, or an automatic transmission. In stark contrast to today’s Suburban, a radio, heater, clock and even the rear bumper were options on the original Suburban. GM’s press release even jokes that it might as well have been called a “sport utilitarian vehicle.” Har, har, har.

Car-based commercial vehicles remained in production throughout World War II, but heavier-duty vehicles based on commercial chassis began to gather more favor with professional and private customers who appreciated the capability, much like today’s private customers. Fast forward about 60 years, when the Suburban hit the mainstream in the 1990s with the SUV boom. And while many customers were new to the Suburban marque at this time, there were many other lifelong patrons who owned several examples throughout their lives, using the bow tie super wagon to haul anything from Little League players to horse trailers: just another example of three-quarters of a century’s worth of versatility.

Chevrolet Suburban At 75: A Historical Look At An American Icon

2010-08-24

In 1935, the United States’ population was a little more than 127 million. A first-class stamp cost three cents, Technicolor was introduced to motion pictures and the Detroit Tigers defeated the Chicago Cubs in a tough World Series. It was also the year Chevrolet introduced the Suburban.

In the seven and a half decades since its introduction, the Suburban became an icon and the industry’s longest-running model. In fact, Suburban is the first vehicle to reach 75 years of production and Chevrolet is commemorating the milestone with a special 2010 75th Anniversary Diamond Edition model.

“Times have changed, but the Suburban remains a fixture in the industry for private and professional customers who need truck-like towing capability with maximum passenger and cargo space,” said Jim Campbell, Chevrolet general manager. “The Suburban’s core capabilities and dependability have remained constant for more than seven decades and generations of people know that a Suburban will haul people and their gear.”

The original Suburban could seat eight, while easily removable seats provided a large, 75-inch-long by 77-inch-high (1,905 x 1,956 mm) cargo area. The 2010 Suburban seats up to nine, but offers up to 137.4 cubic feet (3,891 L) of cargo space when the second-row seats are folded and third-row seats are removed.

History of an icon

The idea for the Suburban was born out of a need for a heavier-duty, truck-based wagon. Through the early 1930s, most manufacturers offered car-based wagons for professional use. Open models with windows and rear seating were known as depot hacks, and were used to ferry passengers and their cargo around train stations and boat docks. Enclosed models, typically without rear seats, were known as sedan deliveries.

Bodywork for these early vehicles often consisted of wood sides and canvas tops; and while they were versatile, their car-based chassis and damage-prone bodies were compromises. Chevrolet began experimenting with an all-steel wagon body mounted on a commercial chassis in the mid-1930s, and the Suburban Carryall was launched in 1935.

The base price of the original, eight-passenger Suburban was about $675, or the equivalent of about $10,900 in 2010 dollars – although the 1935 model didn’t come with frontal and side air bags, OnStar, XM Satellite Radio, anti-lock brakes and stability control, a six-speed automatic transmission or remote keyless entry. In fact, a radio, heater, clock and even a rear bumper were extra-cost options. It might well have been called a sport utilitarian vehicle.

After the Suburban’s introduction, car-based commercial vehicles, including sedan deliveries, remained in production, but the heavy-duty chassis of the Suburban increasingly found favor with professional customers. In the post-World War II years, its popularity with private customers who appreciated its uncompromising capabilities increased steadily.

The Chevrolet Suburban hit the mainstream in the early 1990s, with the overall popularity of sport-utility vehicles. But while many customers were new to the Suburban then, it had garnered a legion of longtime owners who had purchased multiple examples over the years – using them to haul Little League teams and their equipment, tow a horse trailer or seat a work crew on the way to a job site.

When it comes to the advertising scene, no stage is bigger than the Super Bowl. It’s no wonder why companies payed out roughly $3 million for just one 30 second ad spot when over 100 million viewers tuned in this year to watch the latest NFL championship game. After skipping Super Bowl XLIV, General Motors is looking to make a return to the mass screen, this time focusing on the latest offerings from Chevrolet.

According to Automotive News, Joel Ewanick, The General’s U.S. Vice President of Marketing, plans on spearheading the mission of promoting Chevy’s new products. He has taken measures to recruit an all new ad agency that has taken steps to develop a new slogan.

“Yes, we will be in the Super Bowl, I won’t tell you how much or what we’re doing, but I will tell you it will all be about Chevrolet.”

Conveniently, the Super Bowl takes place just after the debut of two critically vital Chevy models here in North America: the Cruze global compact and the Volt plug-in Extended Range Electric Vehicle (EREV). However, Ewanick did not comment on just which models will be featured in the Super Bowl Ads (or if Howie Long will accompany them). It is still safe to bet that GM wants to market these new vehicles as much as possible and – if the timing is right- it may want to include the all-new 2012 Aveo as well.

The agency now in charge of Chevy’s $600 million account is the San Fransisco-based Goodby, Silverstein & Partners rather than Publicis Worldwide, which operates out of Paris, France. Ewanick made the switch just this past May, negating the decision to give the account to Publicis made by Susan Docherty, who has moved on to GM International.

Oh, and “Excellence For Everyone” (or “Everyone Deserves Excellence”) is out the window, as Ewanick wittingly states:

“‘Excellence for all’ — it’s a great title for Stephen Covey’s next book. It’s also something I could find on every one of our competitors and one that I could put on every airline and everything else,” he said. “It’s not specific to who we are and where we’re taking Chevrolet, and I thought that was important. We took a step back and said, ‘What do we have? We have a soul.’ People have deep feelings and passion about that.”

Lastly, the Chevy Camaro will have its own advertising campaign debut in September. Ewanick added that GM plans on pushing the bow tie pony car to elevate the brand and show that Chevy is more than just a docile lineup of Toyota-fighting sedans. Take that, Toyota.

On more than one occasion, we’ve heard pickup truck fanatics express their dissatisfaction with the state of the compact pickup truck segment in the U.S. and Canada: today’s offerings are either too big, too expensive, or too inefficient. That’s why – being the ultimate GM fans that we are – GM’s next-generation small pickup trucks are of great importance and interest to us.

The going rumor these days has it that GM’s next-gen compact trucks will return to their condensed roots. This means that we should expect something along the lines of a Chevy S10 (GMC S-15). These vehicles will most likely be considerably different that the present-day orado/Sierra counterparts, delivering less capability, conspicuously better gas mileage, and a starting price of roughly $15,000 (or even less).

But the ultimate question, however, is whether these new compact trucks should stick with the proven body-on-frame (BOF) design (like the present-day Colorado) or switch to a unibody architecture (like the Honda Ridgeline).

While BOF vehicles are tougher and very inexpensive to produce, the architecture may have passed its prime, especially considering tougher CAFE standards and changing consumer demands. But sharing a platform with an existing GM car or crossover (think: Chevrolet Equinox, Cruze, or Aveo – for example), would definitely result in decreased costs and greater economies of scale, but may compromise utility (ruggedness, power, and payload/towing ratings).

In fact, GM may even end up splitting the development of its compact trucks into two different vehicles: a unibody model for North America and a body-on-frame version for the rest of the world. The former would herald a completely new product while the latter would see the continuous development of the current Colorado/Canyon platform.

So, what do you think GM should do with its next-gen compact trucks? Should they remain BOF or switch to a car-based architecture? Vote in the poll below and sound off in the comments.
