It looks like the rumors were true afterall: the Chevrolet Camaro is finally coming to Europe! The hot-rod coupe – along with its convertible variant – are scheduled to arrive at European Chevrolet showrooms in the spring of 2011.
With the 100,000th Camaro having just rolled off the assembly line, the success of the Camaro is bound to continue well into the future. But the joy of driving one of these Zeta-based ponies off the lot will cost a pretty penny, as the only version coming to European shores is the 6.2-liter V8 model (at least that’s what it looks like).
In that regard, Chevrolet is most likely looking to position the Camaro as a premium-level performance car. This approach mirrors tips received by GM Authority earlier in the year about the next-generation Alpha-based Camaro. Specifically, we were told that the next-gen pony car will continue on the path of the fifth-generation Camaro, working to increase the Chevrolet brand image in Europe and beyond. If you ask us, a 400+ hp muscle car isn’t a bad way to do just that.

We’ve exhumed another Silverado ad! This time, it’s the 2007 Silverado coming face-to-face with its most direct predecessor, the circa-1972 Cheyenne. There is an ephemeral amount of respect and heritage in the clip, although it’s not apparent to the non-enthusiast eye. Click past the break to watch the awesome (in our opinion) ad! (more…)
In case you didn’t already know, the Camaro-Mustang rivalry has been (and still is) one of the hottest comparisons of all time. Some people are staunchly Ford/Mustang people while the rest lie faithful to the muscle car wearing the bow tie (you can guess what camp we fall into). But fast forward to the muscle cars of today and it’s plain to see that these vehicles have evolved to be much more than that: they are valid and credible performance choices among today’s automotive landscape.
What’s more, the Camaro-Mustang sales numbers race has been ongoing for years. Ford’s reinvented Mustang beat the Camaro and Challenger to market, but ever since Chevy launched the fifth-generation (2010) Camaro, the bow tie-wielding pony car has been topping the sales charts while leaving the Mustang in its rearview mirror. This is even despite Ford’s thorough refresh of the Mustang the same year the Camaro went into production.
But Ford forgot a little detail, as the powertrains were not a part of that update. Instead, they were put off until the 2011 model year. The Mustang now has a (respected) 5.0L V8 and a 3.7L V6 that makes a full five horsepower more than the Camaro’s 3.6L six-banger. The new V6 in the Mustang is also the most fuel efficient V6 in its class (albeit by a single mile per gallon). So with all those enhancements, the sales race will surely be one worth watching over the next year and beyond.
However, despite the sales race and close competition, the Camaro reached a production milestone this week as a particular Inferno Orange Camaro SS became the 100,000th ‘Maro to be produced. Chevy reached this milestone less than a year after the 2010 Camaro went into production. Plans for Camaro #100,000 are unclear, but if it isn’t kept for the GM Heritage collection, this VIN will certainly be worth something extra to one lucky owner.
As the 2011 Mustang starts production next month, building Camaro #200,000 may take significantly longer to reach (given the increased competition). But you can bet that the GM Authority Team will keep its eye on the sales race and let you know of any important sales and production information as it happens! In the meantime, enjoy the gallery of high-res Camaro pics right after the break!
As we seem to be going through the time of the truck (with the unveiling of the 2011 Silverado HD and impending reveal of the updated GMC Sierra HD), I felt it most appropriate to show another Silverado commercial. Click past the break for an ad showcasing the last generation Chevy Silverado Heavy Duty doing some fairly unrealistic stuff (for those who like to speed read and miss key words, the key words here are last generation). An automatic transmission is now an option on the Indian-market Chevrolet Cruze compact sedan. The triptronic-capable six-speed gearbox, available only on the Cruze LTZ, is mated to the VM Motori-sourced 2.0-liter turbo diesel engine that’s good for 147 hp and 241 lb.-ft. of torque, all while achieving 33 mpg (14.12 km/l). By comparison, the 5-speed manual transmission 2.0-liter diesel Cruze, which launched in India back in October 2009, is capable of 43 mpg (18.3 km/l).
The automatic Cruze is available in a special three-coat White Diamond paint – in addition to the existing six colors offered on the Cruze (Atlantis Blue, Light Gold, Olympic White, Velvet Red, Misty Lake, Caviar Black). The Cruze AT – as the automatic Cruze is known internally – “uses premium fluids in the transmission that does not need replacement during normal use.”
On top of that, the Cruze has recently been awarded the maximum 5-star rating in European New Car Assessment Program (ENCAP), after winning 5 star ratings in Australian and China NCAP. The Indian-market Cruze, which differs from the upcoming U.S. version only by its (right-hand) placement of the steering wheel and the diesel powerplant, is manufactured in GM’s Halol, India plant and – according to GM India – is “a demonstration of [GM India's] sustained commitment to making Chevrolet the most admired and preferred vehicle brand in this country.”
Being GM’s first ever truly global vehicle, the Cruze is the first of its kind for GM. Even though its price is significantly higher than what the mainstream Indian car buyer would prefer, the Cruze is a world-class vehicle worthy of every Dollar (or Rupee). But this announcement adds insult to injury to North American GM fans, since the Cruze is not even available on this side of the pond (albeit the lackluster Cobalt is). But even when the Cruze does come to U.S. and Canadian markets later in 2010, it won’t be available with the super efficient (and tourqy) 2.0L diesel. So not only will North American Chevy buyers have access to the Cruze more than a full year after other worldwide markets, but that wait won’t have proven to be “worth it.”

Continuing the GM Authority obsession with GM advertising, here’s another commercial from the archives starring the mighty (last-generation) Silverado 3500. HD This one use the old Like a Rock tagline and advocates the Duramax diesel and Allison transmission in the Heavy Duty Silverado with dualies. Do you have the right truck? Watch the video in its entirety after the jump! (more…)
Here’s a recently-released commercial for the Silverado. This ad – in my opinion – outlines exactly what Chevy’s pickup truck is made of and who it’s made for.
The ad starts off with a 2010 Silverado owner discovering an abandoned grassy area where he finds an old baseball. He then remembers – envisioning back to when he was a kid – playing baseball on (what appears to be) the same field, with (what looks like a) trusty 1980s Silverado. So the man gets with his buddies, also Silverado drivers, who team up and clean up the neglected land to turn it into a baseball field.
The ad sums up the Silverado soul and the American free spirit to a tee, all to the tune of John Mellencamp’s Our Country. So click past the break to watch the Chevy’s Baseball ad, awesome Silverado work scenes (such as destroying an old tractor) included! I think you’ll agree that there is much more here than just a commercial to sell a vehicle. (more…)
Today GM has announced that it is initiating a voluntary recall of 1.3 million vehicles to fix a power steering assist issue where a vehicle may become difficult to steer under 15 mph. The recall is linked to 14 crashes and one injury and will be applied to the following models:
GM said the affected vehicles can be still be “safely controlled” but may require greater steering effort under 15 mph (24 kph). Drivers will see a warning light and hear a chime if the power steering fails.
NHTSA opened an investigation into the matter on January 27 after receiving more than 1,100 complaints of power steering failures. The issue seems to occur in older models that are out of warranty, according to GM Vice President of Quality Jamie Hresko:
After our in-depth investigation, we found that this is a condition that takes time to develop. It tends to occur in older models out of warranty.
GM is currently in the process of developing a remedy for the problem and will notify customers when the plan is finalized.
Hresko thinks that “Recalling these vehicles is the right thing to do for our customers’ peace of mind,” and we tend to agree. It’s great to see GM call out the problem early as it may be safe to assume that it doesn’t want to pull a Toyota.

Here’s another great video from the folks at Chevy. This time, the subject is the truck’s sturdiness and 6,000 lb FGAWR (if you know what means, you know you’re a hardcore pickup trucker!). As with all videos of the 2011 Silverado, the conversation touches upon the truck’s heavily-revised frame and chassis. So go on and click past the break to watch the updated truck go through snow like nothing else! (more…)
GM wowed many a car enthusiast (us included) when it first unveiled the Chevy Aveo RS Concept at the Detroit Auto Show. And just a few days ago, we were lucky enough to see some of the first official digitized pictures of the Aveo sedan. As the Geneva Motor Show gets underway this coming week, Swiss residents will have the pleasure of getting a hand-on look at Chevy’s mighty compact. But as good a product as the new Aveo may (seem to) be, its success in the marketplace hinges mostly on marketing as opposed to the product itself.
