Finally there is some official proof, or at least evidence, that a V-Series variant of the Cadillac CTS Sport Wagon is on the way. Enthusiasts have been hoping for this since the initial announcement of the D-pillared CTS and the high-performance model will be a very welcome addition to what Cadillac calls the “CTS portfolio.” If portfolio is still a collection of someone’s finest work, then you will get no argument from the GM Authority team that the CTS range is currently Cadillac’s “portfolio.”
The spy photo shows the rear corner of the wagon with the V-Series badge, V spec wheels, and the same color that the CTS-V and CTS-V coupe have been unveiled in. This seems like very strong evidence that this is for real. While the photo originates from Autoblog, it was captured by one of their sources. And even though Autoblog acknowledges that this ’source’ was – very conveniently – at the right place at the right time, we take no issue with how the image came to be, as it’s enough for wagon enthusiasts out there that the car seems to be heading towards production.

We all know GM’s marketing strategy in the 1900’s – put Americans in a Chevrolet and – as they progressed towards the American dream – they consequently moved through GM brands until they owned a Cadillac. If you had a Cadillac in your driveway in the ’50s and ’60s, you were a somebody. Americans actually dreamed about, one day, owning a Cadillac. It was the ultimate status symbol. Neighbors envied you and other motorists enjoyed watching you drive by. Maybe that was then and one can argue that times have changed, but have they? Today, people still long to drive a status symbol to show their success, not only in America but around the world. The only difference is that Cadillac has been replaced by Mercedes-Benz as the status symbol of American success.
Some may say that “status” never mattered in America (or the world for that matter). But human desire to show status (affluence and position) within society has been with us since the caveman days. It is a desire that is as old as our ability to feel love, anger, or happiness. And, believe it or not, this desire is the very thing that should be driving Cadillac’s focus going forward. Cadillac needs to get back to being the ultimate vehicle the world wants to drive when they want to show they have “made it.” Find out how Caddy can do just that by clicking more! (more…)
Amidst yesterday’s upper-level management shakeup, it appears that General Motors has canceled its plans to build the Cadillac Converj concept. For anyone who may be a bit hazy on the Converj, it was a concept Cadillac coupe based on GM’s E-flex platform, sharing the plug-in hybrid electric (PHEV) powertrain with the Chevy Volt. In April 2009, Motor Trend reported that The General had approved the production version of the Converj as a 2011 or 2012 model year vehicle. GM later refuted this report, stating that the Converj was “a concept vehicle undergoing a review.” Then in November, a flurry of reports informed us that the Converj was given the green light for production afterall. The last we heard of the gorgeous two-door Caddy PHEV was at the 2010 Society of Automotive Analysts, where Lutz was quoted as saying, “The Cadillac Converj is cleared for production,” but that “It won’t be next year or the year after that.”
It appears that since then, GM has come full circle in its review for the Converj and has determined the vehicle to be unfeasible. According to GM and Cadillac, the car would be prohibitively expensive and would lose the impressive range of the Volt due to equipment and amenities expected by Cadillac customers. The added weight of these features would have a negative impact on range while adding substantial cost to the mix. This increase in expenses as well as the decrease in range wiped out the business case for the Converj.
While this is disappointing to (green) Cadillac fans everywhere, there is still hope: the concept version of the upcoming XTS sedan unveiled at Detroit featured a plug-in hybrid powertrain that could be shared among other Cadillac vehicles (although it wasn’t the Voltec). The GM Authority Team expects this technology to show up in the upcoming rear-wheel-drive ATS compact sedan. Moreover, the plug-in hybrid version of the XTS is expected to arrive on the heels of the gas-powered model sometime after 2013. Click past the break to reminisce the what-could-have-been Converj Concept.

With the proverbial hammer having dropped on Hummer just yesterday, it’s somewhat refreshing to discover that GM’s brands, both “core” and discontinued, have the very best to offer in customer service according to the most recent J.D. Power and Associates Customer Service Index study.
In the “Mass Market Brands” category, GM dealers beamed with customer satisfaction – taking six out of the top seven spots. Ironically – Hummer took first place with a score of 815. The scores were based on a scale of 1,000. Following Hummer is the now-discontinued Saturn with 808 points. Buick came in third with 805 and Chevy took fourth wit 787. The euthanized Pontiac scored 785 (sixth) while GMC got 783 (seventh). All GM brands rated well above the industry average of 758 while PR afflicted Toyota came in eighteenth with 741 points.
In the Luxury Brand category, Cadillac finished second with a score of 827, following Lexus in the rankings. The average score was 813 for the category. Of note – (now Spyker-owned) Saab fell short of that average with a score of 796, followed by Audi, Porsche, Infiniti, and Volvo.
Experts say that most of the improvements may be attributed to lower foot traffic volumes of dealers, but it’s great to see GM brands doing so well in this nation-wide study. We have the full press release, along with J.D. Power images, right after the jump!

How niche? How about no diesel engine choices…
In the U.S., that would be the equivalent of taking away the BBQ sauce option for our chicken wings and leaving only Buffalo. For Cadillac to stand out in Europe as a brand, this may be a necessity.
Since Cadillac sales in Europe have been so terrible – mainly due to issues with distribution agreements – GM needed to do something, and do it fast. As a company, Cadillac will reestablish itself by presenting all-new models to Europe and creating the organization dubbed Cadillac Europe, much akin to what BMW USA is in the ‘States. The vehicles will be sold through authorized Cadillac dealers all over Europe, with the Geneva Motor Show serving as the official introduction to the new brand image.
The CTS will expand its European line by introducing the new Sport Wagon, the upcoming coupe variants, as well as the record-setting CTS-V coupe. The SRX CUV will debut later this year and the Escalade Hybrid will also make its way over as well, although most likely only for a spot on Top Gear. All models will strictly feature the anticipated 2.9-liter turbodiesel V6 gasoline engines.
As evidence to this very American approach to engine choices, GM Europe spokesperson Nick Twork told Autoblog that Cadillac will “be a niche brand.” Here’s to hoping it works, and that diesel variants are in the pipeline. But then again, European buyers may go crazy for the newest option on the CTS sedans – premium Recaro racing seats.
Full press release after the jump!
We just found out that Recaro front bucket seats are now an option on the Cadillac CTS sedan. Previously, the Recaros were offered exclusively on the 556hp CTS-V sedan.
The keep-your-body-snug performance seats are available for an additional $2,800 on the Performance ($39,765+) and Premium ($47,405+) Collections of the 2010 CTS. We think it’s a great move on Caddy’s part, as it gives drivers the ability to enjoy best-of-breed sports seats without opting for the completely-dominating CTS in V-spec trim.
Why would anyone ever want to do that? We can think of a few reasons, including the possibility that the customer would like to save some money or, better yet, prefer a docile (read: not asphalt-disfiguring) sedan with a set of performance buckets that match the rest of the interior.
So go on ahead and configure your CTS sedan to your heart’s content using Caddy’s configurator right here!
Here’s another creation from the awesome folks at Hennessey – this time a manual 2011 Caddy CTS-V undergoes a transformation.
The CTS-V is no slouch to begin with, but Hennessey takes the Corvette ZR-1 derived 6.2L powerplant even further by adding a few bells and whisltles, including a cold air induction system, a smaller supercharger pulley, ling tube headers, a three-inch exhaust system, an upgraded intercooler, and a new engine management system. The result is a staggering 700 horsepower and 700 lb.-ft. of torque that can propel the four-door sedan from standstill to 60 mph in a lightning-fast 3.3 seconds.
Check out the video of the “Hennesey’d” CTS-V doing the quarter mile in 11.14 seconds at a top speed of 129.95 mph. Now that’s impressive! (more…)
Remember this one? Caddy’s Parking Space ad from a few years ago works to prove just how useful the Escalade EXT really is. It’s just like a mullet – business in the front, party in the back. Watch the full ad after the break and then let us know how you think that teensy red car got into the pickup bed. (more…)
There is much debate in the automotive industry about what types of vehicles should or should not receive hybrid powertrains. Whether you believe it should be the cars that are already fuel efficient and that – consequently – will post the most gains after being ‘hybridized,’ or those that need the most help and show the largest percent improvement, GM will soon have you covered.
In stark contrast to the competition at Toyota, General Motors has long been a player in the full size SUV and pickup hybrid game. GM’s two-mode system in GMT900 vehicles has received considerable accolades across the automotive industry, posting impressive fuel economy gains over gas-only counterparts. And with GM making the decision to move electric motor development and production in-house, we can only expect more electrifying vehicles in the future (pun intended). As such, it would come as no surprise that The General is currently in the process of improving this two-mode electric hybrid system and will make it available in future rear-wheel drive luxury vehicles – that much according to Tom Stephens, GM Vice Chairman of global Product Development. As GM works to increase European sales of Chevrolet to 1 million yearly units by 2015, things aren’t looking so hot for Cadillac on the continent. In fact, things are very gloomy, as Cadillac sold only 177 vehicles in the UK last year (during the entire year) while only 36 Corvettes found homes in driveways across the nation.
These numbers pale in comparison to even exotic makes such as Ferrari (452) and Maserati (408). Luckily, General Motors’ native European brands performed far better. Opel had two of the top four sellers in the United Kingdom as well as a third in the top 10. The three vehicles are the Opel Corsa, Astra, and Insignia, respectively.
It doesn’t take a genius to realize that GM’s import brands need a stronger presence in Europe (read: a kick in the arse). Let’s hope that 2010 will be the breakout year – so long as GM can reach an agreement with dealers in the immediate future. The GM Authority Team remains hopeful.
