As details about the Opel Flextreme, the VOLTEC-powered concept, which Opel will unveil at the 80th Geneva International Auto Show, begin to leak out, GM Authority pauses for a moment to note some larger trends.
First, this car is a perfect example of Opel/Vauxhall leveraging the advantages membership in a global automotive family confers, as Nick Reilly told employees the other day. Opel emphasizes that, “size and comfort do not have to be sacrificed for a vehicle to be environmentally efficient” explaining how the Flextreme will be positioned relative to the upcoming Chevrolet Volt and Opel Ampera twins. But by using the same powertrain in those clones, the Cadillac Converj, and the Flextreme, The General is utilizing its global reach by spreading VOLTEC development costs over as many models as possible.
Second, despite Manoli’s excitement with the concept’s “expressive design, environmental innovation and alternative propulsion systems,” GM Vice Chairperson Bob Lutz believes that history will ultimately forget this vehicle. While not a hybrid in the traditional sense, it does possess both a gas engine and an electric motor, making it what GM Authority has deemed an “interim solution.” So when declaring that the Flextreme will define the “company’s vision of future mobility,” Opel is [hopefully] committing to full electric-only vehicles when the technology becomes available. But before that vision is realized, the Flextreme is a crucial stopgap in the goal of “boost[ing] the company’s credentials as a leader in environmental vehicles.”
Finally, the launch details are not accidental. The Flextreme concept will likely be unveiled on March 4, 2010, the first day of this year’s Geneva show. Opel’s all-new (and flexible) Meriva will also don at Geneva before the show concludes on March 14. The Opel Ampera debuted at Geneva last year, but the Flextreme’s release location is more than sentimental. One of the historic advantages of the Geneva Auto Show is that it is held on neutral territory, i.e., the Swiss do not manufacture automobiles. Given the animosity breeding in Europe’s automotive sector due to massive capacity reductions and suspicions of Opel/Vauxhall soliciting bribes from European states, it appears that The General is fully exploiting Swiss neutrality.

Speaking at the annual National Automobiles Dealers Association (NADA), Bob Lutz declared his belief that the top 25 executives at General Motors are underpaid. Because GM is one of the companies that received billions in federal bailout money, Treasury officials are reviewing the company’s executive pay packages. It is probably not a coincidence then that Lutz chose this time to make his remarks regarding the matter of executive pay.
While Lutz does think that the 25 executives at GM deserve more compensation because of “the rigors of the job and demands and the accountability,” it is important to note that his exact quote says that the executives “are being paid way, way, way below market.” The distinction here is that Lutz is pointing out that they are being paid below market and not simply that they are underpaid. He even acknowledges that a company such as GM, which has recently emerged from chapter 11 bankrupcty, can not expect to have the same levels of executive compensation as similar companies that have not been through the grim process. Though it’s still a concept, Opel has taken the EREV drivetrain of the Opel Ampera (aka Chevy Volt), married it with a longer wheelbase, and sculpted it with all-new (and rather tantalizing) sheetmetal for this years’ Geneva Auto Show.
Branded as the Opel Flextreme GT/E Concept, the midsize five door hatchback features all of the same capabilities of the standard Chevy Volt/Opel Ampera and then some… because it’s bigger. And bigger usually means more toys.
From what we know so far, new features include 350mm-long sliding vertical panels (spoilers) that extend out of slots behind the rear wheels at speeds above 31 mph to help maintain aerodynamics and “guide high-speed airflow around the rear corners of the car, further reducing the amount of turbulence.” And that’s beside the fact that they’re sweeeeet.
Opel also implemented carbon fiber panels on certain parts of the body and an all-aluminum frame for weight conservation. The panels and sculpted design allow the Flextreme to achieve a drag coefficient of .22, which is less than the third-gen Prius (0.25) and Chevy Volt (0.26), and several species of birds.
The concept will be uncloacked next week at the Geneva Motor Show and we can only hope for a Chevy variation to make it over to this side of the pond. More as it happens right here at GM Authority!

1,160 GM dealers who have filed for arbitration will certainly be delighted to hear that GM North America President Mark Reuss claims to have their franchises restored in two months’ time, well before the June deadline.
The obvious logic, according to Reuss, is that (dealers) “are the most important interface we have with customers.” The cold truth is quiet simple – dealers must give the best service in the business in order to both sell products and retain customers for The General.
Though the news is good, GM has yet to disclose an estimate of the overall cost of the arbitration process for all involved dealers. More as it happens on this very topic at GM Authority’s arbitration proclamation!
What do you get when you cross an Escalade with a Suburban? No- You actually get Chevrolet’s Suburban dressed up in a White Diamond Tricoat sheetmetal suit and a cashmere leather interior. Dubbed the Chevy Suburban 75th Anniversary Diamond Edition, GM is celebrating its longest running model name the longest-running nameplate in the entire industry by commemorating 2,570 ‘Burbans with a plethora of standard stuff, including unique badge-work and celebrative stitching.

Notable features of the Chadillac Escaburban include the previously noted White Diamond Tricoat paint, stitching and cashmere leather, on top of (ahem), 20″ 5-spoke chromed wheels, XM Satellite Radio, rearview camera, integrated navigation radio, Bluetooth phone connectivity, rear park assist, second row entertainment system, heated and cooled front seats, remote vehicle start, and adjustable pedals. The Diamond Edition is identifiable by the chromed out roof rails, the 75th Anniversary badge on the C-pillar and steering wheel, the commemorative floor paneling, and – of course – the exclusive/awesome paint.
There’s no better way to celebrate a nameplate older than the entire Volkswagen brand. Here’s to another 75 years for American SUV that big families love and hippies hate.

Today is media day for the Chicago Auto Show and that means GM finally rolled out its much-awaited Chevy HD model to the world.
Now you’re probably thinking: “It basically looks the same, so what’s the big deal?” Well, yeah it looks the same (as we expected), but if you take a look beneath the sheet metal, it’s clear where all the time, effort, and money went.
While GM hasn’t told us the official output for the all-new 2011 Chevy Silverado HD, it is expected that the new 6.6L Duramax V8 turbo-diesel will have much higher torque and horsepower numbers and attaining an 11 percent boost in highway fuel economy, all while being capable of running B20 bio-diesel fuel, on top of regular diesel. That pins estimated range at 680 miles with the Duramax under the hood and the huge 36-gallon fuel tank.
Speaking of which, the diesel versions will also be featuring a urea injection system that will mix with the diesel fluid to reduce nitrous oxide emissions by as much as 63 percent. The urea system, coupled with the 5.3 gallon tank, will last upwards of 5,000 miles before needing a refill.
With the all new fully-boxed frames, beefed up Allison 1000 transmission, and new and larger suspension mixed in the stew with the new engine – you get a recipe that can tow upwards of 20,000lbs from the fifth-wheel, a payload capacity of up to 6,335lbs, and a chart-topping total Gross Combined Weight Rating of 27,500lbs. Those numbers win the heavyweight title belt in our eyes. Currently, Ford and Ram have nothing on those numbers. The truck may look the same, but when was the last time looks could tow anything? Yeah, never. The engineers working on this project really know what they’re doing. Possibly the best in the business.
We’ve unearthed yet another video, this time of the stunning Camaro Synergy Special Edition at the NAIAS. The super-special Camaro will be made in limited quantities from February to May of this year and will set you back a pretty $26,790. In the video, when several attendees were told the price, we’re not sure whether they were surprised in a good or a bad way. See exactly what we mean after the jump.
Barrett-Jackson is known for auctioning off cars and raising bagfulls of money for noble causes. During the past weekend at Scottsdale, none was perhaps more noble than GM’s donation to the American Red Cross (ARC) to raise funds for efforts in Haiti.
GM donated the 427 Limited Edition Z06 Corvette, valued at over $80,000, to ARC. Thanks to a generous buyer, the gavel slammed at the $200,000 mark – enabling the ARC to help the people of Haiti that much more. But the 505 horsepower LS7 supercar was not the only car donated by GM for a good cause.
The other donation came in the form of the first-ever production CTS Coupe, donated to Michigan’s College for Creative Studies (CSS). The model sold for a handsome $95,700, including buyers commission. CCS will get to keep the entire sum minus the market price of the car, which is pegged at roughly $35,000.
Despite GM’s financial woes of last year and all that came along with them, coupled with the fact that The General could currently use every penny to see that taxpayers are reimbursed (and so that the Tea Party may possibly shut up) – it’s still good to see the company’s sense of corporate responsibility has not left the building with several former executives. I’m glad they are keeping on with good causes and hope to see many more in the future.
If you ever wanted to know what a mid-engine Corvette Zr1 would drive like, take a look at the all-new and all-American Verde supercar by Revenge Designs. The uber-powerful, 638 horsepower LS9 engine featured in the fastest ‘Vette ever built is going to grace the Verde and is the mightiest engine available in the upcoming $190,000 emerald road monster.
Featured at the North American International Auto Show, the Verde features scissor-style opening doors, a glow of emerald paint that could probably be seen from outer space, muscular RWD, and bones spliced from the legendary Ford GT with a body composed of aluminum and carbon fiber. Other engine options include the 605 hp Roush racing V8, and the (still being tested) Hp2g hybrid motor that is rumored to put out 400 horsepower and achieve 100 miles-per-gallon (?!).
According to representatives present at the NAIAS, the Illinois based company plans to reach out to both the domestic and European markets and looks to launch the Verde by November of this year.
So here we have two of America’s best supercars ever made – the Ford GT and Corvette Zr1 – in the reptilian Revenge, which speaks to the astonishing engineering that is the ZR1’s supercharged LS9. It looks to be a winner!
I’m totally getting one.
As we reported last week, next-month’s Chicago Auto show will bring with it a heavily updated Chevy Silverado Heavy Duty. Here’s a round-up what we know so far:
It’s been rumored for quite some time that the new Silverado HD will ride on an all-new chassis. Whether that means a move away from the current torsion bar front suspension to a different setup such as the Ram HD’s multilink coilovers or Ford Super Duty’s solid front axle remains to be seen.
From the latest spy shots of the next-gen Silverado HD, however, it seems that GM is perfectly satisfied with the current front running gear.
We can just make out what appear to be torsion bars.
Update: we’ve just received a tip that the styling of the new Heavy Dutys will be substantially revised and border on aggressive. The minor styling changes to the front fascia (described below) are a styling change made only to the mules.
What’s more, the same spy shots are show minor revisions to the sheetmetal, especially the front end. For example, this one-ton Silverado 3500 dually sports a smaller top inlet and a bigger Chevy bow tie. The biggest change up front, however, seems to be the softening of the metal flares at corners of the front bumper – the design aspect debuting on the GMT-900 trucks that irks many a Silverado fan. The 2011 model’s flares seem to have been cut from top to bottom, leading to an extended plastic
front air dam that now runs the full width of the front bumper. (more…)
