Chevrolet will kindly remind truck aficionados the Colorado ZR2 is smaller, lighter and more nimble than a Ford F-150 Raptor, but the two trucks accomplish very different things.
The 2017 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 is a formidable rock crawler; the F-150 Raptor is a sand-dune shredding monster. While Chevrolet puts all of its off-road eggs in a ZR2-sized basket, Ford may be looking to outgun the bowtie brand further. Sources have told Ford Authority there’s much potential for a Ford Raptor Super Duty and it is, indeed, on the table.
Pickup trucks are hot right now and expanding the Raptor name to a larger truck—with even greater payload ratings—could be just what the market ordered. A potential Raptor Super Duty may also complete a 1-2-3 punch of off-road trucks—Ford is also said to be readying a Ranger Raptor to take on the Colorado ZR2.
If and when a Raptor Super Duty comes to light, surely it will have the folks at Chevy Trucks pondering a response. The Z71 package is just fine for everyday use, but the market is yearning for more.
