With big names in the biz like Lingenfelter and Hennessey having all but perfected the craft of modifying high-performance GM vehicles such as the Chevrolet C7 Corvette Z06, it’s easy to skim over all of the other builders who are taking a crack at unleashing these cars’ extra capabilities. But there are, in fact, other players – players such as Thompson Motorsport, which claims to have the world’s first and only C7 Z06 with a front-mount turbo configuration.
The bottom end of the beastly 6.2L LT4 V8 in Thompson Motorsports’ front-mount-turbo Z06 is still stock, but the top end has been reworked with stiffer springs, a custom cam, and a few other odds and ends. Since Thompson Motorsport builds engines, it wanted to find out what the weak points of the LT4 were in stock form before going in and working its magic.
With the turbocharger pushing 18 psi, this Z06 makes 988 horsepower to the rear wheels, which is enough to run a 9-second pass (from a roll). Hit play to see it go head-to-head with a modified Nissan GT-R, as well as a C5 Corvette, and what looks to be a Porsche 997 Turbo Cabrio.
