Ford Planning CUV And SUV Barrage To Take On Chevrolet

The ‘010s may be defined as the decade of the crossover. Sure, the 2000s introduced the ever-popular body style to the automotive consumer, but it hasn’t been until recently when the idea of car-like driving capabilities, fuel economy and cargo space really came together into a winning package. Even if a crossover really is a tall station wagon.
But, we digress. Automakers are scrambling to capitalize on the crossover market. That includes General Motors, which scored a major win with consumers by bringing the Opel Mokka sourced Buick Encore to the U.S. before “sub-compact crossover” was even a segment. Now, Ford is eying up Chevrolet and GM alike with a plentiful portfolio of the crossover type.
Our sister publication, Ford Authority, reports Ford has major plans to introduce up to four new crossover and sport utility vehicles. One particular product, the Ford EcoSport, is a likely contender to be imported to challenge a shrunken 2017 Chevrolet Equinox and even the Chevrolet Trax.
Ford has also reapplied its trademark for the Aviator name, and a new Bronco seems all but confirmed, too.
Meanwhile, Chevrolet will try to be on the offensive. The brand will reposition the 2017 Equinox as a much smaller model, leaving a healthy gap for (we assume) a new Chevrolet Blazer to fill. The Chevrolet Traverse will round out the CUV side of things, and the Tahoe and Suburban will keep on keeping on as body-on-frame offerings.
With gas expected to continue its price decline, the profits await for larger vehicles in the American market.
“Even if a crossover really is a tall station wagon.”
Sean, yes they are. Basically the modern station wagon.
So I remember reading quite a while ago that the Equinox would shrink to allow for a two-tier Traverse, similar to the Hyundai SanteFe Sport 5 passenger and the SanteFe 7 Passenger. Is the plan now the same only the Mid size Traverse will now be a TrailBlazer, I mean Blazer? Somehow the 2.8 Duramax needs to fit into all this
BTW Sean, why is it impossible to comment on FordAuthority? Not one of the articles have any comments and I have tried commenting on there to no avail.
I hope your trying to comment about the garbage site talking about garbage product!
How is the ecosport competing with equinox where its competitors Is the Trax? And equinox is comparable to escape?
How many of these new vehicles will be hybrifd?
I know I’m in the minority, but I would like to see a GM station wagon to compete with the Volvo v70 or v90.
We will probably see one at some point from Buick. Regal.
Show me an automaker not investing in SUV and CUV models and I will show you one in great trouble in the future.
Very true. If they’re smart they will go with today’s trend.
Don’t know why the EcoSport wasn’t released at the same time as the Encore. When was that? Like 3 years ago? And it won’t be another year at least before it makes it way over here. And, don’t you think that they had to build it from scratch. All they had to do was federalize it and place it on ships. What kind of idiots are running Ford that they are so far behind the times? Maybe they’ll release a bunch of new models this coming year like what Chevy is doing right now. If they don’t, Ford will be the #2 in American cars for a number of years to come.
I wish Chevy or GMC could get a unibody RWD/4×4 to compete with the Jeep Grand Cherokee, but the Acadia reveal tells me otherwise.
They did … It was called the H3 hummer, and it’s gone to the grave
