Although much recent news has revolved around happenings from the 2016 North American International Auto Show, Opel dropped a teaser we’ve been waiting for yesterday. The brand officially announced it will show a reborn Opel GT, with more information to come on January 21.
We saw no actual shots of the car itself, but we were shown a reimagined “GT” badge at the end of the short teaser. So, we want to take this space to sort through what a new GT could be. We’ll lay out a few options we’ve come up with.
A new GT may take shape as a sporty, all-wheel drive coupe, likely with plenty of Monza design cues. If production is an intent, this is the most plausible scenario.
Or, Opel could channel the last generation GT, a Kappa-based roadster we saw as the Pontiac Solstice and Saturn Sky. Though, we have doubts on seeing a roadster.
Something very possible could be an Opel-variant of Buick Avista. It would be interesting for Opel to show an Avista-based vehicle, and could be a step to judge reception of a true 2+2 sports coupe for Opel and Europe. Much like Buick stated with “reimagine what a Buick can be” the brief teaser told us to take a fresh look at Opel through a new set of eyes.
Finally, the least likely scenario we’ve cooked up is a Corvette-based Opel sports car. Theoretically, it could work as a show car, but we doubt a production, Corvette-based Opel GT would ever come to life. But how cool would that be? If only our 10-year old selves ran General Motors …
