For anyone who’s had the chance to climb into the 2015 C7 Corvette Stingray, you understand how much of a pleasure it is to drive one. The C7 Corvette inspires instant confidence, and can be pushed harder than you feel you’re capable of. With the driver controls engaged, anyone can whip a C7 Corvette around the track pretty easily.
That’s what Lieutenant Colonel Bill McClendon found out. McClendon spent 20 years serving as a fighter pilot, and longed to fill his void for speed after his piloting days were over. As the story is told by Hot Rod, McClendon originally intended on purchasing a Porsche 911 GT3. Surprisingly enough, he was talked out of the decision by a group who fixes Porsches.
After detailing the cost savings in repairing and maintaining a Corvette over the Porsche, he pulled the trigger on a 2015 C7 Corvette Stingray: a Z51, seven-speed manual with the 3LT interior package. Inside the owner’s manual, McClendon found a special spot on tracking the 2015 C7 Corvette.
“Do not track under 1,500 miles.” As McClendon arrived at Road Atlanta, his odometer just ticked over 1,503.
After a day at the track, it was evident a few upgrades were necessary to the C7 Corvette. McClendon found the seats in need of more support, so Sparco racing seats were then installed. To control body roll, the car has been aligned for track usage. High performance brake pads have been installed, with upgraded rotors and calipers coming in the future. Michelin slicks were added, and Forgeline wheels installed for better grip.
There’s a long list that corresponds to this track build.
Ultimately, McClendon states he’s impressed with the value the 2015 C7 Corvette provides. Before any of these upgrades were installed, the car was very capable around the track. Understeer is near none, unless you force it will the throttle, and the car is extraordinarily balanced.
Now, the car looks as you see here and has seen 27 track days thus far. We’re sure that number will only climb. And remember, you’re never too old, or too young, to build a race car.
