Before the TCR International Series headed to Monza this past weekend, the Opel Astra OPC had yet to get a podium in the FIA-mandated touring car championship. But thanks to a determined Fernando Monje, the car now has a third place finish to its name in the series, which has so far been dominated by the Honda Civic Type-R and Seat Leon.
Monje and the Campos Racing team were a staggering five seconds off the lead pace in practice, forcing them to make some thorough revisions to the setup before the first of the weekend’s two races kicked off on Saturday. After a decent fifth place finish in the first race, the team again adjusted their setup as they shot for the win on Sunday.
“In the second race we managed to have a very good top speed, but I struggled under braking and at the entry of the corners, as it was almost impossible to keep it on the road,” Moje said following his podium finish. “The rear was very unstable but I did the best I could and the results came. All the work we have done has paid off, and it’s great for Campos Racing, Opel and everyone who worked so hard for this project.”
After giving the team its first podium so far this year, Campos racing will likely bring Monje along for the next leg of the TCR Series at the Salzburgring in Austria, though it has yet to confirm its driver lineup for the race.
