Earlier today, racing driver Johnny O’Connell gave the GT3-spec Cadillac ATS-V.R its first win in the Pirelli World Challenge series, after starting from the pole position and successfully holding off a field of 36 other competitors.
Motorsport.com reports that many – including the track announcers – thought today’s race would end under caution, as GT Cup driver Preston Calvert lost control in a corner during the tail end of the race, sliding along the grass and hitting a tire wall. In the end, a one-lap dash to the finish determined O’Connell and the Cadillac ATS-V.R the winners.
It’s fortunate that O’Connell managed such an impressive performance, as teammate Andy Pilgrim didn’t fare nearly so well, pitting just a lap after the start of the race due to mechanical issues. The victorious O’Connell didn’t quite have this win handed to him either, despite starting from pole; the No. 9 K-PAX Racing / Flying Lizard McLaren 650S GT3 looked poised to overtake the ATS-V.R for a time, but was ultimately too busy fending off the No. 20 Dyson Racing Bentley Continental GT3.
