General Motors and its joint ventures sold 338,350 vehicles in China in March 2015, up 8.0 percent from March 2014.
Sales at Shanghai GM — The General’s primary joint venture in China responsible for Chevrolet, Buick, and Cadillac vehicle sales — grew 3.9 percent year-over-year to 145,607 units, representing record March domestic sales. Sales of Chevrolet and Cadillac grew, while Buick was down slightly.
Buick sales in China decreased 0.2 percent on an annual basis in March to 78,659 units.
Buick China sales were led by the new Excelle GT, which sold 18,609 units, followed by the original Excelle, which sold 15,694 units. Sales of Buick’s lineup of SUVs were up a cumulative 147.8 percent to a combined 16,700 units.
Chevrolet sales in China increased 3.1 percent on an annual basis to 57,751 units, representing the brand’s record March domestic sales.
Chevrolet China sales were led by the Cruze, which sold 20,892 units, followed by the Sail, which had sales growth of 15.1 percent to 20,580 units, and the Malibu, which grew 17.1 percent to 9,622 units.
Cadillac sales in China came in at 9,197 units, up 75.6 percent on an annual basis, representing an all-time monthly record.
Cadillac China sales switched from being dominated by the XTS to being led by the ATS family, which includes the ATS and long-wheelbase ATS-L. The compact sedan lineup recorded 3,593 sales during the month in China. But the XTS wasn’t far behind, recording a 36.4 percent sales growth to 3,355 units. The SRX, meanwhile, sold 2,148 units.
SAIC-GM-Wuling domestic sales were up 16.9 percent to 192,287 units.
Sales of commercial vehicle brand Wuling decreased 0.7 percent from March 2014 to 158,628 units. GM explains that the slide is due to the continued weakness in the mini-commercial vehicle segment.
Wuling sales were led by the Hong Guang MPV family, whose sales increased 52.5 percent to 97,353 units. The Wuling portfolio continues to migrate from mini-commercial vehicles to MPVs.
Sales of the entry-level Baojun brand jumped 599.8 percent on an annual basis in March to 33,659 units. The brand was led by 30,008 sales of the Baojun 730 MPV.
