Reading that title, you may recognize “Chaparral” as the name belonging to a legendary US automobile racing team, zany laboratory for mad-science experiments with aerodynamics, and originators of radical concept features that would eventually end up either trickling-up to Formula One, or being banned outright from motorsports.
Chaparral Cars proved throughout the 60s and 70s that “innovation – and a strong Chevy race engine – could drive you to the winner’s circle.” So said GM Executive Vice President Mark Reuss in a press release. Thus, the radical concept car that General Motors’ Advanced Design Studio has dreamt up for the Vision Gran Turismo festival very appropriately bears the Chaparral name, and carries the tradition.
The “Chevrolet Chaparral 2X” as it is called – “2X” being in Chaparral Cars’ tradition of “2”-plus-one-letter nomenclature – has yet to be uncovered. The Vision Gran Turismo downloadable content coming this holiday season for GT6 will include the Chaparral 2X, as well as Vision GT concepts from a host of other automakers.
The Chevrolet Chaparral 2X was developed by GM’s Advanced Design Studio with help from Chaparral Cars Co-Founder Jim Hall. It is rendered in the image above under a virtual car cover, flanked by the Chaparral 2D (right) and 2J (left).
From what little we can make out of the car’s overall sculpture, we anticipate something just as radical and exciting as every past Chaparral Cars effort.
