Few cars out today capture the imagination and enthusiasm of the public like the Corvette C7 Stingray. So what better way to pay homage to America’s sweetheart/plaything than by watching it grab a hot lap in the hands of Car and Driver‘s Tony Quiroga?
We can’t think of anything better, either. The $53,000-plus sportscar was tested by Car and Driver at this year’s Lightning Lap event – it’s sort of the American Nürburgring lap time. In the video below, you can jump into the cockpit to watch what looks like a very satisfying lap around the Virginia International Raceway track.
The first thing that hits you is the noise; this 6.2 liter pushrod V8 sounds absolutely marvelous in the process of pushing the Corvette around the track. In fact, it drowns out all else – that, or the car is so planted and superbly balanced that there’s hardly a whiff of tire squeal at any point on the track.
Watching this hot lap, it truly does look satisfying: balanced, sharp, and engaging with its 7-speed manual transmission. It flies by the finish at 2 minutes, 53.8 seconds, behind the Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 and Porsche 911 Turbo S, but impressively, beating out the Audi R8 V-10 Plus by almost 4 seconds.
All things considered, that’s a lot of reasons to smile for quite a small price.
