Nearly five years ago, a Mercedes AMG executive declared “the horsepower war is over.” He further stated that the torque war has just begun. He was referring to electric vehicles when he made this statement, and the idea of instantaneous torque delivery from an EV.
Stephen Grinwis, this particular Chevrolet Camaro owner, is a firm believer in those words because he swapped his ride for an interesting alternative. The owner gave up his beloved Camaro after the $550 a month for fuel, and wear and tear of the $3,000 set of tires set in. To replace it, he purchased a Smart EV, according to a Clean Technica feature. In contrast to the mighty Camaro, he reports a cost of $20 a month for electricity. That’s not all he loves about his new ride, though. The gas-guzzler gone spark conductor loves the instant torque the Smart EV provides, and constantly catches himself punching it around town without attracting any unwanted attention from the boys in blue.
Most definitely a rare breed, Grenwis is only 1 of 1,390 Smart EV owners who purchased through the month of July. At the time of the report, current sales numbers were not available for the model. On the other hand, General Motors sold nearly 65,000 Camaros through the month of August.
