After a strong performance at Watkins Glen International last week, Corvette Racing is travelling to Canada hoping to capture their third-straight TUDOR United Sportscar Championship win at the Canadian Tire Motorsport Park just outside of Toronto. Despite the team having never competed at Watkins Glen, Corvette Racing’s Antonio Garcia and Jan Magnussen managed to pilot the No. 3 C7.R to a first place finish, bumping the pair into the lead in the GTLM driver’s championship and putting Chevrolet in first in the manufacturer’s standings.
Garcia and Magnussen’s strongest opponents in Canada this weekend could end up being teammates and defending race winners Tommy Milner and Oliver Gavin. Milner held on to the duo’s lead in the closing laps of last year’s race to win by 0.267 seconds in the C6.R.
“It was a great race last year – one of the races I feel was one of my best.” said Milner. “To have that much pressure from a car that was quicker than us in the Viper… pushing me hard and running qualifying laps for an hour. The last couple of laps were definitely exciting.”
“We’re hoping for the same this coming weekend,” Milner added.
It won’t be easy though. Canadian Tire Motorsport park is known for being one of the more daunting tracks for drivers on the schedule. The 2.459-mile, 10-turn road course is known for its intimidating first three turns, which are among the biggest challenges of any track in North America, Corvette Racing says.
“Canadian Tire Motorsport Park is similar to Watkins Glen in that it is a track where you need good momentum over the lap.” said Garcia. “They are both classic circuits with a very old-school feel and very fast. For a driver, it is a big thrill to race there because of the speed and history. Corvette Racing has a strong history there with a number of wins and I hope Jan and I can continue that.”
Corvette Racing has a successful history at the Canadian track. Since its first race there in the C5-R in 2000, the team has racked up 10 wins, tying for its most wins at a track with Road Atalanta.
