Opel’s sporty Astra GTC has adopted the all-new 1.6-liter CDTI diesel engine, which has been available on the rest of the Astra lineup since late last year. The quiet ‘Whisper Diesel’ is more powerful and more efficient than the outgoing 1.7-liter CDTI unit it replaces, Opel says.
The 1.6-liter CDTI is producing 136 horsepower and 236 lb-ft of torque, 6 horsepower and 14 lb-ft more than the 1.7-liter. It sacrifices nothing in the way of efficiency for performance, though, returning 4.1-liters per 100 km, or 57 mpg on the European cycle.
The new diesel engine also helps the hot Astra GTC back up its performance-oriented looks. It will now accelerate from zero to 60 mph in 10.2 seconds, and from 50 mph to 75 mph in fifth gear 8.9 seconds, an improvement upon the previous 10.5 seconds. The Astra GTC is available to be ordered now with prices starting at 24,390 euros in Germany ($33,203 USD).
