2016 Chevrolet Volt To Offer More Than One Powertrain Option

Currently, the Chevrolet Volt plug-in hybrid is offered with only one powertrain option, but according to Edmunds, the upcoming second-generation model could give customers more than one choice.
An unnamed industry source said General Motors will introduce an all-new electric powertrain that includes a more efficient electric motor and a lithium-ion battery with extended range on the next Volt. Additionally, the current Voltec powertrain will be offered alongside the new powertrain as a cheaper alternative.
“Basically, there will be two (powertrain) choices, kind of like a car might have a four-cylinder engine and a V6 option,” the source said. “This would be kind of the same thing.”
The redesigned Volt due in time for the 2016 model year with the newer, upgraded battery pack and electric motor will give the car more range and will be priced above the base model. The battery pack will also be more compact.
“The current Volt continues to do well in its current stage with the current technology. Volt customers, according to J.D. Power, are the happiest customers on the face of the earth. We found a winning formula and we are not going to change it,” Chevrolet spokesman Mike Albano told Edmunds.
The current 2014 Volt has an all-electric range of 38 miles. Once it is fully depleted a 1.4-liter engine kicks in to help recharge the battery, giving it a total range of around 380 miles, according to Chevrolet. Edmunds’ source said the new model will have an all-electric range of around 60 miles and a further overall range.
60 miles is great and will satisfy 95% of those driving to work and back everyday. The average drive for Volt owners is 41 miles per day. The average for U.S. overall drivers is 33.4 per day.

Hopefully they can hold the price even with the extended range.
Don’t the Volt and ELR have 1.4L gas generators? I’d really like to see that new 1.0t I3 and 1.6t I4 soon for compacts and midsizers..
Right you are Evan, A typo on my part. Thanks.
Well I had know there would be two models but I had not heard the details on the lesser model. I had hopes it would be the equal of todays and the up level model would advance the car more. That looks to be the case.
60 Miles should be a very good jump for this car.
I would like to see them do an all electric 3 model of this car. It should be able to meet and beat the range of most electric cars and it would silence the nit wits that like to poke that this car still has a ICE.
I expect a larger full electric car in the near future from Cadillac.
The Elevation
I’m also hoping for a pure EV from GM as well that is bigger than the Spark and available in all 50 states
you will see one much sooner than you think.
Sounds very promising. The volt was a good car at launch that’ll just get better with time, let’s see what kind of changes the general brings to the table, and hopefully it’ll make even more people look at a volt before buying a peace of crap Prius.
