The F80 BMW M3 and M4 were staring down the 2015 Cadillac ATS Coupe as it rotated on its turntable at the 2014 North American International Auto Show, knowing full well that the two-door is just the beginning of a performance car blitz from the brand. And while the new ATS Coupe as it stands doesn’t pose much of a threat to the high-performance BMW models, an ATS-V Coupe sure will. Though rumor has it that Cadillac is looking beyond matching anything else the the compact sport luxury segment with something else.
According to Motor Trend, Cadillac’s product planners are looking at a variant of the ATS that will sit above the 3.6L twin-turbo V6-powered ATS-V. Call it the ATS-V+, if you will. What that entails is more power, stemming from a different powertrain, being a V8 of some sort, perhaps featuring forced induction. We don’t think the 625-plus horsepower supercharged LT4 V8 from the 2015 Corvette Z06, but a seven-speed manual appears to be in the cards, according to the report.
If Cadillac is indeed planning this, it’s going to make a lot of purists happy, while also making the ATS-V+ the last laugh in compact luxury performance. Expect it around the 2017 model year.
