VIA Motors, the company that plans to take trucks, vans and SUV models from General Motors and convert them into extended range EV’s, is at the Los Angeles Auto Show this week with an innovative and unique new truck accessory, a solar panel tonneau cover.
Vias director of national fleet sales and vehicle development, Jeffrey Esfeld, told Autoblog Green that VIA wants to use all the space available in the bed of the truck to increase the vehicles efficiency. The solar panels are industrial grade and, according to Esfeld, can take a fair amount of abuse, so construction workers need not worry.
The solar cover will available in 400-watt and 800 watt configurations. The 400-watt tonneau will add an additional 6 miles of range when fully charged, with the 800-watt delivering about 10 miles of extra range.
The solar tonneau cover will be available as an option when the VIA VTrux goes on sale for $79,000 in March of next year. There is no word on pricing.
