Cadillac has announced that the new 2014 ELR will come equipped with a Smart Grid service with the OnStar RemoteLink Mobile app. Combined with the ELR’s extended range electric vehicle technology, the service will enable the luxury coupe to correspond with the electric grid in an effort to save energy and money.
ELR owners will have access to the RemoteLink Mobile app’s many features, including the ability to monitor the EV’s operating systems, as well as view the vehicle’s state of charge, electric range, the number of electric-only miles driven, and the MPG equivalent output. ELR drivers will also be able to schedule when their vehicle charges, including off-peak hours when electricity rates are at their lowest.
Perhaps most impressive, however, are the Smart Grid APIs, or Application Programming Interfaces, with which the OnStar Mobile app comes equipped. The APIs work with utilities and third-party companies to ensure the most efficient use of the electric grid and save customers money. One such API will enable drivers to charge their vehicles with renewable energy as it becomes available on the grid – an option which could make the Cadillac ELR one of the most energy-efficient vehicles on the market.
In addition to these features, ELR drivers will also have access to many other OnStar services including Turn-by-Turn Navigation, Hands-Free Calling, Vehicle Diagnostics, Automatic Crash Response, and Stolen Vehicle Assistance. Lastly, the 2014 Cadillac ELR plug-in luxury coupe comes equipped with a one-year subscription to OnStar’s premium Directions & Connection package.
