There’s a record for pretty much everything. For instance, the standing fuel economy record for a cross-country trip of Canada happens to be 5.59 L/100 km, or roughly converted to 42.08 United States miles per gallon. Well, that used to be the record, until a couple took a 2014 Chevy Cruze Diesel for a road trip from Vancouver to Halifax. That’s 5,955 kilometers , or just over 3,700 miles. That greatly eclipses our 2,700-mile round trip from suburban Detroit to Denver, which we thought was pretty damn ambitious. I’ll still give myself props for doing the whole journey myself, and not fainting of boredom through Nebraska.
When it was all over, the 2014 Cruze Diesel set a new trans-Canada fuel economy record, at 4.3 L/100km, also known as 54.7 USMPG. The trick? There seemingly was no trick. The drivers either went the speed limit, or just under.
