Thanks to GM Authority’s curiosity, the Automotive News can report that GM is considering an off road variant for its line of redesigned 2015 Chevrolet Tahoe, 2015 Suburban, and 2015 GMC Yukon and Yukon Denali family. We were the ones to ask GM truck chief engineer Jeff Luke of the possibility of such models (and more), and we originally reported on it. AN just happened to hear to answer to our question.
Simply, Luke told us: “We are looking at, for this generation, a more off-road variant.” The market of these full-sized SUVs also value their off-road capabilities over more tame crossovers.
In the past GM has offered off road versions of its Tahoe and Suburban large SUV’s under the Z71 nameplate, though Luke says these models have not been big sellers. But a fresh take at something like this could make us feel better about the demise of Hummer.
At the very least, we can expect GM to continually introduce more upgrades and technologies for the new line of SUV’s, including improved powertrain options. When inquired about the possibility of an 8-speed transmission in the new line of SUV’s Luke said to “stay tuned”.
The 2015 Tahoe, Suburban, Yukon and Yukon XL will be on sale nationwide by the first quarter of next year.
