Upcoming 1.5L Turbocharged Engine Rumored For Next-Generation Chevy Cruze, Malibu

Automotive News is reporting that the upcoming next-generation Cruze will utilize a turbocharged 1.5L motor, which is said to be part of the next-generation family of Ecotec engines. The report also stated that the engine could find its way in the refreshed Malibu that was redone for the 2014 model year sometime in the vehicle’s life span.
Horsepower and torque figures can be only up to speculation at this point, as with fuel economy, but it shouldn’t be too hard to out-do the 138 hp and 148 lb-ft found in the present Cruze and its 1.4L Ecotec mill. We also wouldn’t be surprised if the new engine winds up in the next-generation Chevy Sonic. However, we’re not sure how well this engine will serve as the heart of a performance variant of either the next-gen Cruze or Sonic.
150-155hp/165lb-ft + 28/40mpg, would be my guess
If a 2.0L can be tuned to around 270HP/295ft-lb (Regal GS), then 190HP/200ft-lb is possible. Realistically, I would expect 170HP/180ft-lb to get best in class power. I’d think 40MPG HWY or better is still possible with that tune.
Numbers will be better all the way around but too soon to speculate on the true numbers.
Keep in mind the new cars should be lighter so they may go for similar power to just a little more and get more MPG.
GM has learned with Turbo DI more low end torque gets the car up to speed faster but gives more off throttle time. When off throttle the fuel is cut off. Increasing my Torque in my 2.0 Turbo from 235 FT LBs to 315 FT LBs gave me 1-2 more. A GM engineer told me it surprised them too when the Turbo upgrade kits added power and torque then gave an increase in MPG in normal driving.
Rumored for the Malibu and Cruze, but not Sonic, which shares everything with the Cruze, and the Malibu is a heavy tard with a 2.4? L N/A? motor now.
Alrighty then…
I think, despite the 2014 refresh, that the Malibu will have to wait until its next generation to become *truly* competitive. The 2.4L-four is a carryover engine and is only for the Eco (mild hybrid) models. It is indeed underwhelming and yields minimum fuel savings over a non-hybrid powertrain. But you should be looking at the volume engine, which is the 2.5L four-cylinder. Also, the Cruze doesn’t share all that much with the Sonic, chiefly because they occupy different classes and use different platforms.
I never understood why people care about power levels in these type of engine’s for these cars!
Now if we’re talking about camaro corvette then chat away! But these cars are for people movers and mpg should be the first thing to take into consideration!
If you want to go fast buy a fast car not a econo car!
Btw I own a malibu eco, corvette, and a 70 chevy truck!
1. Because we want the car to get out of it’s own way.
2. Because we are passionate about GM vehicles and want them to be best in class in most (if not all) measures.
3. Because economy and performance don’t have to be mutually exclusive. (i.e. C7 Corvette getting 30MPG+)
4. Because many people don’t have the luxury of having a performance car AND an economy car.
5. Because an engine with good volumetric efficiency inherently makes more power using less fuel, so such an engine is able to provide both.
6. Because I put over 25k miles a year on my daily driver, and I want a car that I spend that much time in to be enjoyable to drive and I want it to be fuel efficient.
BTW, I own a 2001 GP (the daily driver), a 1972 GP [600+HP 🙂 / 11 MPG 🙁 ], and a 2005 Chevy Crew cab. My daughters have a 2006 Solstice and a 1986 Fiero.
“If you want to go fast buy a fast car not a econo car!”
The Cobalt was an econo car….not so much so when it was turbocharged and set a record at Nurburgring.
People do care about the power levels in these kinds of cars because it shows that you don’t need a Camaro to have a fast car from GM.
Ever hear of hot-hatches? Just because it is an economy car doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be able to have fun. Not to mention, if it takes you 15 seconds to get up to 60mph to properly merge onto the freeway there is a problem. It isn’t about going fast or having a performance car, but you should still be able to enjoy what you drive and yield good MPG.
A car shouldn’t serve just a single purpose. Would you want your phone to only be able to make phone calls, then you need to carry a camera, an mp3 player, a laptop, a flashlight, a PSP, a GPS, etc. How practical is that?
With economy cars having different trim levels and engine options it lets the consumer decide where their happy-medium falls and what suits their needs best. How hard is that to understand, really? You seem slightly ignorant towards those people, is it because you have the ability to own both an ‘eco’ car and a Vette?
No real comment until we find out primarily how much the city mileage improves, and to a lesser but still considerable extent the power numbers. And none of this common pointing to highway numbers while the city number is barely any better. I assume most people are like me and do most of their driving in the city, so that is what really matters.
It will have more power then a toyota
It is not just pure power anymore it is getting to be about smooth flat torque and MPG.
DI engines thrive on Turbocharging. The engines we have now from GM show the flat torque curves like a table top. My 2.0 can it 315 FT LBS at 1800 RPM and hold it till 5300 RPM.
The feel and performance of the torque at low end give street cars the feel and performance people love and it also helps them get up to speed faster for less on throttle time for more MPG.
The real issue with mine is with FWD it likes to spin the tires if I nail is at any speed up to 40 MPH in the dry and up to 60 MPH in the wet. The nose unloads with the weight transfer to the rear like most FWD cars and then the front breaks traction so easy. It scared me the first time I spun the tires on the freeway at 50 MPH, The engine cut back the boost dropped and the traction light came on. I thought at first I broke something.
Note too that my traction has been better since I replaced the worthless Pilots on the car. The OE Pilots had just ok dry traction and very poor wet. They were not the best Pilot models.
I sure hope so, but meanwhile the competition won’t be standing still.
It is quite interesting that Honda, Toyota and Nissan (the pinnacles of reliable motoring) have all elected *not* to use turbocharged engines in their mainstream cars. Perhaps they know something that everyone else doesn’t…?
They know they can’t compete so why bother! I can’t believe people in America fell for their crap all these years!
Because for years they have dwelled on small high revving engines in very light cars. At least at Honda.
I suspect Toyota will step more into the Turbo arena since they now have ties to Subaru.
It would be very foolish to ever say they could not compete.
Also note companies like Mazda and Honda are focusing more on green engines with lower emissions.
Might want to check into the Honda Earth Dreams Engine line they are investing heavily in. It gives you the focuse of their future products. Honda is going the efficent eviromental route for their future product. There is a good size market segment that they can tap into here. but Honda has always been a little out of step with their lines for better or worse.
When F1 is switching back to turbo 6’s, and turbos have been used for decades in passengers cars and have only gotten better and extremely more reliable and efficient, I highly doubt the engineers at Toyota-Honda-Nissan know anything that Ferrari, McLaren, Williams, Saab, GM, Subaru, etc, etc. With applications also in diesels, aircraft, marine, etc, etc.
I would be surprised to see a 1.5 L engine. I’d rather bet on a 1.3 L , adding one cilinder to Opel’s recently released 1.0 L 3 cilinder engine. It fits with the downsizing trend and helps production cost efficiency. ( cilinders, pistons, etc) All having the same size. This is similar to BMW’s approach but they use 0.5 L per cilinder. (They announced a 1.5 L 3 cilinder engine)
Put the engine in now, don’t wait until sales start to suffer like GM usually does. The 1.4T should be the base engine, the 1.5T the LT engine and a more powerful engine for a sport model
