Pick up an issued of Hot Rod, and you may find yourself gazing at this “Grabber Olds” with awe and outright confusion. Vintage off road racing? Why, of course! At the Baja 1000? Never doubt such things, mortal. As what you see before you is the work of Ron Johnson of Tacoma, Washington. It’s a 1970 model-year 442 that was restored back to life after a wreck in 2008.
Johnson put in the effort of keeping the vehicle as close to original as possible while working with the obvious race modifications; the car’s original 410 engine block with new internals nestled in the engine bay produces 508 horsepower. Be sure to check out Hot Rod for the full story, which is quite lengthy.
But let us expand on the subject. Is this type of vintage restoration right for an Olds 442? This humble writer likes to think so. Let us know in the comments below if you agree.
