The latest reports from Australia tell us that the Holden Commodore’s days are numbered. Or, numbered as we know it. For one, we know that the Zeta platform is going to disappear with the rollout of the next-generation Chevy Camaro and discontinuation of the Commodore in
2015-2016 around 5-6 years from now after an updated model on an updated Zeta platform introduces itself. This makes Aussies uneasy, as the future of the Elizabeth plant depends on the Commodore, or the Commodore’s replacement.
Some even speculate that the Commodore name will fade into the sunset. And while that may be possible, it would almost be like Chevrolet killing the Silverado name here in America for the sake of something unfamiliar. It wouldn’t make sense. But having a new Commodore based on a flexible global architecture such as, say, GM’s Alpha platform, paints a very plausible picture for the future of the celebrated moniker, and the Elizabeth plant.
