Meet Randy Wright and Yvonne Zissler — development engineers for the Chevy Equinox. Randy, Yvonne, and other engineers put the Equinox through a parade of punishments so as to make it reliable and durable.
In fact, the Equinox test fleet of 300 vehicles averaged 4.5 million miles — that’s 180 times around the earth or 9 times to the moon and back. Doing so allowed the team to identify and resolve over 3,000 issues. And here’s something we didn’t know: on the road, engineers identify and report issues using OnStar.
In this episode, the Equinox undergoes a battery of tests, including an environmental squeak and rattle simulator, water intrusion test, twist ditches, a chassis control development course, and a mud and gravel intrusion test at GM’s Milford Proving Grounds. But no test can match the abuse and maltreatment of Brian Gutzaik (read: maniac). In fact, it wouldn’t surprise us that Mr. Gutzaik goes through cars like normal people go through laundry detergent.
