The Opel and Vauxhall badges have not been represented in motorsports for quite some time. In the case of World Rally Championship, it’s been nearly 30 years since any General Motors Europe brand entered the competition. But GM Europe president Nick Reilly has noticed the young audience following the WRC and believes that a representation from either Opel or Vauxhall would increase the attention and consumer base of young buyers. Other racing circuits such as the World Touring Car Championship, Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters, and even the British Touring Championship are being considered as well.
Even though it’s a great idea, and exciting news for any racing fan, General Motors Europe is in some rough financial shape right about now, having posted a loss at $1.9 billion this year. Automakers know that it takes a lot of money to operate a motorsports team, which tends to happen only when it can be afforded. But if GM Europe were to re-enter motorsports with Vauxhall or Opel, touring car racing would be the most affordable route to go.
