What is showing to be an incredibly hot collectors item, the first Chevy Volt for sale is about to close its first day on the online auction block at $180,000. All of the proceeds will go directly to the Detroit Public Schools math and science departments, hopefully to help develop the next generation of EV engineers.
Bidders have until December 14th to place their bid at www.volt.charitybuzz.com – but at this rate, who could afford it by then?
Having already slammed the Toyota Corolla, Chevrolet is now going after the other stalwart of the compact segment – the Honda Civic. In its latest (perfectly-performed) commercial for the Cruze titled Dear Civic, Chevy cites an Edmunds.com report that suggests the Civic should be looking over its shoulder while the Cruze lurks around the city looking for the iconic Japanese compact. Adding some Bugs Bunny nostalgia to the ad, the commercial ends with a precious Elmer Fudd catchphrase: “It’s wabbit season” “It’s Civic season.” Continue past the break for the 30-second spot. Starting today (Nov. 30th) and running through 6 p.m. on December 14th, the second Chevrolet Volt suited for retail will be on an online auction block, with all proceeds going to Detroit Public Schools math and science departments. Why not the first Chevrolet Volt? Because General Motors will be holding onto that piece of history, as a symbol of accomplishment for its engineers and all others involved in the Volt program that managed to bring the milestone vehicle alive from a paper sketch in a span of just 39 months.
