General Motors India has registered a 45 percent year-over-year growth in July. The increase was primarily driven by the Chevrolet Beat (known as the Spark everywhere else in the world), Cruze, and Spark (aka Daewoo Matiz).
According to a GM India press release (available below), these three vehicles “have become the industry benchmarks in their respective segments and a winner among consumers in India, with their best-in-class design, performance and other product attributes.”

It looks like we’re not the only ones excited about the upcoming Chevy Volt: Chevrolet dealers are also waiting in great anticipation for the E-REV’s arrival later this year. But when the Volt hits dealer lots, it may not be all butterflies and roses, since some Chevrolet dealers may be planning to gouge Volt buyers by increasing the purchase price of the vehicle. GM Chairman and CEO Ed Whitacre recently sat down with the Free Press and discussed many GM-related topics, including pricing of the much-anticipated Chevy Volt. Whitacre, who will soon step down as The General’s CEO, touted the Volt’s exclusive extended-range technology as well as the E-REV’s ability to utilize both, the engine-generator and the electric motor/battery pack to power the vehicle. Whitacre also threw a few punches at Nissan’s Leaf pure electric vehicle. Click past the break to see what had to say.
GM has had quite the eventful day today. During the same conference in which Ed Whitacre announced his plan to step down as CEO (effective September 1st), his company has posted its second consecutive quarterly profit, this time tabbed at $1.3 billion in earnings after taxes. Continue reading.
If the title of this heavy and somewhat left-field news article caused you to spit out your Mountain Dew, coffee, or whatever you prefer to drink at this hour, don’t worry. You’re not the only one. When General Motors held a conference call to discuss its second quarter earnings, we only expected to report on just that, and not Big Ed’s resignation just when we were starting to get comfortable with him leading The General. And no, Maximum Bob Lutz will not be the one grabbing the reins.
Effective September 1st, 2010, GM board of directors member Daniel Akerson will be filling the big shoes Whitacre is stepping out of. Whitacre will stay on as chairman until the end of 2010, at which poin Akerson will take over the position.
Akerson, 61, is a former telecommunications CEO (much like Whitacre) for the business telecommunications company XO Communications, where he served from 1999 to 2003. Since 2003, he has been the managing director for global investment firm The Carlyle Group and still holds his position today. Akerson has also lead Nextel as its CEO from 1996 to 1999 and its chairman from ’96 to 2001.
It pretty much goes without saying that Akerson is no more a car guy than Whitacre. But he has been a voice in virtually every key decision since July 2009, when GM exited bankruptcy. We’re expecting great things from Mr. Akerson! Keep reading for GM’s presser.
Much earlier this year, we covered the unveiling of the all-new, super-versatile Opel/Vauxhall Movano full-size van. We’re not ashamed to say that the model got us pretty excited (as far as vans go).
Why, exactly, is the Movano so appealing to us? For starters, we like the spec sheet. With 29 different body variations and more cargo space than rival Mercedes/Freightliner (and at one point, Dodge) Sprinter and a more affordable price, the Movano could do wonders for the stale van market here in the United States and Canada if it donned a GMC or Chevrolet badge.
Apparently, somebody within General Motors has been reading our articles, as we just got word from a trusted source that plans of bringing some of the van models from the Old World have been laid on the table and are currently waiting the ever-important approval. Continue reading.
General Motors has added and/or recalled 6,900 jobs in the United States since exiting bankruptcy last year. During a radio interview, GM vice chairman Steve Girsky that some of these workers were laid off during the time leading up to The General’s bankruptcy proceedings and were called back in when production was increased. Check out those white-wall tires. Behold the painted-on wood paneling. Behold it. This, dear reader, is what you would call “art”. Well, you would, if it were – in fact – art. You would also think this would be some individual’s little after-market project. Believe it or not, it isn’t. This variant was spawned from Chevrolet UK itself and, according to the presser, the reason for this piece of work is to “celebrate the brand’s American heritage and connection to youth culture.” We can’t point our finger at the inspiration, but it could be that the marketing department watched National Lampoon’s Family Vacation one too many times. Some of us have been wildly anticipating the moment the long-awaited U.S. version of Top Gear makes its debut on The History Channel – and that hour is now closer than ever! The first trailer for the show is online, with hosts Tanner Foust, Rutledge Wood, and Adam Ferrara.
As you can tell by the trailer (available below), the show looks to be as exciting as the “Top Gear” name implies, bringing cool tests and eccentric challenges (along with some very beautiful videography) to the car fanatic in you. And it looks like the actual show won’t let us down, as the series will include a new challenge as its centerpiece. Here’s the gist on how it works: the three hosts each pick the best $1,000 car and proceed to put it through a punishing “moonshine run” dirt course.
