So there I was: a greenhorn to the automotive journalism trade, sitting one-on-one with one of the biggest movers and shakers of the automotive industry for the better part of the past decade; a former general manager for the Cadillac brand and the CEO of the Hummer brand. The man is James Taylor – and he has been a catalyst for positive progress within General Motors. During his tenure, he lead Cadillac away from the stodgy kind of luxury brand it once was and – with the launch of the first-gen CTS and SRX models – took it in the direction of “Art and Science”. With Hummer, he held the entire brand in his hands, having started afresh as its own company. Well, that’s the way it would have been, if it weren’t for the series of unfortunate events about which we all know by now…
As GM made its way through bankruptcy, Hummer was one of the brands that was deemed to not have a role in the new company. Along with Saab and Saturn, Hummer was put up for sale to any and all interested parties. It was also the first wind-down brand to score a bite. Unfortunately, nothing came of the offer. When the Chinese government pulled the plug on GM’s Hummer sale to Sichuan Tengzhong Heavy Industrial Machinery Company Ltd., it killed the brand’s best chance of seeing the 2012 model year and beyond. And though reports by sources such as CNN and the Wall Street Journal about Hummer having other bidders were true, none of these suitors were capable of purchasing or operating the brand. Vauxhall has shown off renderings of its Red Victor 3 – a custom-built drag car that uses an 8.8 liter turbocharged GM V8 stuffed into a heavily modified 1967 Victor FD Body. The Victor was a vehicle produced by Vauxhall between 1957 and 1978. It replaced the Vauxhall Wyvern and was superseded by the Carlton. The 8.8 liter engine is good for 3000 horsepower and the car’s top speed is rated at 240 mph, with a quarter mile of 6.5 seconds (yes, you read that correctly). Make the jump to continue reading.

The good men and women at General Motors are sick and tired of carrying the Government Motors label. In a recent interview with the Detroit Free Press, GM CEO and Chairman Ed Whitacre had the following to say about the moniker:
“We’re tired of being called Government Motors by a lot of people. We know that’s keeping some people from buying our vehicles. Nobody at GM likes that label. Everybody is embarrassed that all this happened. We are on a mission to prove that it was a great thing to bail it out. We’re going to go as fast as we can go.”
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is in the process of raising the standards by which it determines the safety ratings of vehicles. The more stringent frontal, side, and rollover tests will make it more difficult for automakers to achieve five-star crash test ratings, something that’s sure to decrease bragging rights among auto manufactuers.
A total of seven General Motors vehicles will be some of the first to be tested under the more difficult standards, including the Chevrolet Cruze, Malibu, Equinox, Tahoe, Traverse, Silverado 1500 Extended and Crew Cabs, as well as the Buick Lucerne. Continue reading.
This 1961 Chevrolet Suburban that’s on sale on Hemmings.com is definitely a peculiar find. The two-tone paint job, paneled windows, and Caddy V8 make it look like a government vehicle of some sort, perhaps having been used in the military or maybe the forest service. This is one of those vehicles that most likely has many stories to tell… if only it could talk. From the seller’s description:
