In an interview with Reuters, the now-retired legend that is Bob Lutz had a few retorts in the general direction of Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla Motors. Here’s what Maximum Bob had to say:
“So far, all of Tesla’s shortcuts have failed,” Lutz told Reuters. “They seem to hold the usual Silicon Valley view that that region is the sole repository of brainpower in the United States and everyone east of the Sierras is a dim-witted dinosaur.”
Just in case you’re wondering, Lutz was responding to comments made by Musk earlier in the week.

Opel has just released the first ad for its all-new Opel Meriva MPV. The advertisement is in line with the latest entertainment trend (read: 3D). Check out the ad after the jump, including the uber-cool flying creatures, soccer, balloons, hugs, and an upbeat tune. Unfortunately, Opel didn’t include 3D glasses, so you’ll need to bring your own. And if you don’t have 3D-capable eyewear (or implants that would render such accessories useless), have a look at our high-res gallery of the compact MPV with coach rear doors. Watch the ad here.
The Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra full-size pickup trucks currently hold a Domestic Parts Content (DPC) of 65 percent – just below the minimum amount of 75 percent required to be a candidate for the Cars.com American Made Index. The Index is a list composed of ten cars and uses a formula that measures US-built cars that are bought in large quantities by American consumers and hold at least 75 percent DPC. Interestingly, five of the models on this year’s list were not even considered the year before. So, what GM models made the list? Keep reading…
Futuris Automotive, Holden’s biggest parts supplier, will be able to bring back a second shift at its Adelaide factory as a result of the decision by the GM-owned Australian automaker to return the afternoon shift at its Elizabeth plant in November.
Futuris Automotive supplies seats and interior trims to Holden and expects to restore nearly 200 jobs. The supplier cut its second shift when Holden was hit by the global financial crisis last year (as well as the carpocalypse) and – as a result – scaled back production. Keep reading…
Here’s an interesting statistic: researchers expect 60 percent of the world’s population to live in cities by 2025. That’s according to Elizabeth Deakin, a Professor of City and Regional Planning, at University of California, Berkeley. She believes that “new ways of organizing and managing transportation and urban development will be needed to deliver a better quality of life” – and this is just what General Motors set out to do in the Drive to 2030 Sustainable Urban Mobility Forum. The series started at the end of May with The Pathway to Sustainable Mobility Forum. Keep reading…
Suffice to say that American buyers have never really had the opportunity to own any stellar small trucks. The Dodge Dakota was always a little disappointing while GM’s Canyon/Colorado twins haven’t achieved tremendous acclaim (or success). And don’t even get us started on the centennial Ford Ranger. The Toyota Tacoma is the closest thing to a success story in this segment while Honda couldn’t work its supposed magic with the (let’s just call it “interesting”) Ridgeline. Is GM looking to change all of this with the next generation Colorado and Canyon? Keep reading…
It looks like the next generation Corvette will feature The General’s upcoming generation V small block V8 engine. The powerplants hold a development tab standing at almost $900 million and will be composed of cast-aluminum with the traditional overhead-valve layout. The engines will also see upgrades including direct injection, Variable Valve Timing (VVT), E85 capability as well as the still-unexplained “advanced combustion system” and will be built all over the US of A and Canada.
Here’s the interesting part: this engine is said to have a displacement of 5.5 liters with a power rating of 440 horsepower – the very same-sized engine featured in the 2010 Corvette Racing C6.R GT2-class racecars. Rumor has it that the 485 hp engine featured in the C6.R (dubbed the LS5.5R) is very similar to these gen. V small block pushrod V8s.
Though we have a few presumptions regarding what kind of engine GM’s next generation supercar will hold, we are still in the dark about what we can expect from the C7 Corvette though there have been rumors. What’s more, Corvette Chief Engineer Tadge Juechter has affirmed that the C7 will not be a watered down version of the C6. We certainly hope so.
While the upcoming Chevrolet Volt may be the consumer focus of General Motors’ green efforts, there’s another side to the story that many may not be aware of. GM has ambitions goals for transforming automotive manufacturing into sustainable, environmentally friendly operations. In 2008, The General announced its goal to eliminate landfills from half of its major manufacturing plants worldwide by the end of 2010. Make the jump to keep reading…
Two House of Representatives Congressmen allege that GM is destroying documents, emails, and other material needed for ongoing investigations in the U.S. House Oversight Committee. U.S. Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., and U.S. Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio sent a letter to GM CEO Ed Whitacre urging to stop destroying the documents in question: Keep reading about the debacle…
The 2010 J.D. Power and Associates Initial Quality Study (IQS) has been released and it’s chock full of surprises. The study surveys more than 82,000 purchasers and lessees of 2010 model year vehicles after ninety days of ownership and asks them about any problems during the time period.
This year, the industry average rose to 109 problems per 100 vehicles (PP100) from 108 PP100 in 2009. GM received fairly aceptable scores in the study this year, with Cadillac and Chevrolet scoring 111 PP100, Buick with 114, and GMC with 126. Unfortunately, all GM brands scored below average in the study. However, several GM vehicles received top quality honors in their respective classes, including the Cadillac CTS, Chevrolet Avalanche and Tahoe, and GMC Sierra. Keep reading…
