  • Colored In And Rendered: 2012 Chevrolet Malibu

    Mar 20th, 2010

Colored In And Rendered: 2012 Chevrolet MalibuJust a few days ago, we brought you GM’s filings to the US Patent & Trademark Office of what looks to be the 2012 (next-gen) Chevrolet Malibu. From there, GM Authority’s own rendering extraordinaire Hakim Givens took it upon himself to color in the details; what you see above are the results!

Looking at this real-life photo reassures our earlier thoughts that Chevy’s upcoming revision of the Malibu will be very much reminiscent of Ford’s Fusion sedan, with an upright profile and longer overhangs.

But are we the only ones who find the front fascia extremely similar to that of the Mercedes-Benz C-Class? We have all of the patent filings after the break!

  • By The Numbers: US – Chevrolet – February 2010
    by
    Mar 20th, 2010

By The Numbers: US Chevrolet February 2010In the month of February, overall Chevy sales jump a healthy 32 percent! But the 28-day month contains a few very interesting (if not puzzling) results. For example, overall Corvette sales are down 39 percent, while sales of the HHR and Express Van increased 82 and 33 percent, respectively.

Those aside, it’s great to see Chevrolet’s bread-and-butter vehicles posting across-the-board increases: Cobalt is up 69 percent, Malibu is up 31 percent, and Impala is up 50 percent! And that’s not to mention the Equinox, which posted a 132 percent jump! Click past the break to get the full model breakdown and calendar year-to-date numbers! (more…)

  • Spy Photos of Bob Lutz’s New Book Heard In Interview
    by
    Mar 19th, 2010

Spy Photos of Bob Lutzs New Book Heard In InterviewBob Lutz’s first book, Guts: 8 Laws of Business from One of the Most Innovative Business Leaders of Our Time, was published in 1998. Times change but Lutz has kept his innovative touch, having spent the last nine years turning GM upside down (and succeeding). In his rapidly approaching retirement, Maximum Bob plans to write his second book as well as spend more time flying.

Innovative and controversial often go hand in hand, and Lutz knows both. His novel ideas about business, leadership, and management have brought him to the top of each of the big three American automakers (along with BMW). With good reasoning, Lutz challenges many accepted business norms in Guts. Presumably, the new book will incorporate his unique thinking throughout his tenure at General Motors and the problems of turning around this sleeping giant.

Lutz’s new book looks to be a project he will (to paraphrase him self) sink his teeth into, something he has yearned for at GM ever since taking on his current advisory position.

So when will we get a chance to read Bob’s new book (that, as far as we know is still unwritten)? He retires on May 1 and will hopefully begin writing ASAP.

  • Retribution: GM Getting Payback On Uncooperative Dealers?
    by
    Mar 19th, 2010

Retribution: GM Getting Payback On Uncooperative Dealers? When GM set out to reduce its dealer count by 2,000 units last year, it was met with grave resistance. At first, many dealers tried to invalidate the move, resulting in the creation of the Committee to Restore Dealer Rights (CDRD). Founded by Tammy Darvish, Jack Fitzgerald and Alan Spitzer, the CDRD lobbied Congress to outlaw The General’s plan.

Turning out to be unsuccessful, the CDRD was then able to pass an arbitration law that gave dealers a chance to reinstate. Of the 1,350 dealers set for closure, 1,160 took the opportunity to arbitrate. Of these 1,160 dealerships, 661 were retroactively reinstated and 499 have the option to contact GM for reinstatement or compensation – and “GM would consider it.” Of that 661, however, none include the seven stores owned by Darvish, Fitzgerald, and Spitzer, who believe GM is getting retribution for their involvement with the CDRD.

Stay tuned as we find out more. In the mean time, we invite Darvish, Fitzgerald, and Spitzer (individually or otherwise) to either write in to us or participate in the GM Authority Weekly Podcast. We would love to hear their story!

  • Lutz’s Retirement And Future Plans
    by
    Mar 19th, 2010

Lutzs Retirement And Future PlansAt the start of the decade, the American Revolution began at Chevrolet and ended up enveloping all of General Motors. This transformation was mostly inspired by Bob Lutz’s desire to change and invigorate product development at General Motors, starting way back in 2001. Since then, the number one automaker in the world has lost the number one spot, even despite great progress: legacy costs, inefficient business processes, economic turmoil, increased competition, and rising costs pushed GM to file for chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. Indeed, the most recent GM history sounds grim. But without Bob Lutz, The General would be in significantly more trouble… something along the lines of Chrysler.

You see, Chrysler’s weakness stems from undesirable product, something that may have plagued GM if it weren’t for Lutz, who receives a lot credit for GM’s most current success, including the majority of the company’s new products. Now that the organization has embraced Lutz’s focus on product, he feels his mission is accomplished and, for the second time in two years, has announced his retirement from General Motors.

Riding on the success of several launch products such as the Cadillac SRX, Chevrolet Equinox, Buick LaCrosse, and GMC Terrain, Lutz has decided to leave GM on a high note. Now that he sees “outstanding product that astonishes the media and customers with its detailing and its low noise level and its beautiful ride and handling and its beautiful exterior and beautiful ornamentation,” his first priority job is done  The departure seems amiable despite the fact that Lutz seems bored with his latest position as an adviser, which he took on after Ed Whitacre was appointed CEO and proceeded to remove marketing from Lutz’s job description. Even Lutz said his decision to retire was “a combination of not having an assignment that I can sink my teeth into or something to run,” and not being needed because “everyone gets it[.]”

Although Lutz earned a lot of credit in his tenure at General Motors, not everything was easy sailing (driving or flying). No matter his mode of transportation, the man was not afraid to stir things up. His ability to set the press astir and inspire controversy was second to none and he did so while facing opposition from within the company, requesting to add features to align vehicles with customer desires. Despite reactions, Maximum Bob got people looking at GM for reasons other than bailouts and bankruptcy.

Speaking of bankruptcy, Lutz gave Uncle Sam an “A” for work with GM but let it be known that at first found it difficult to work with a board inexperienced in the auto industry From his own industry stallwart point of view, this makes sense. Perhaps that’s why he was given the advising role in the first place – to look over the federal newbies.

So what will Lutz do after he packs up his office at the Ren Cen? He plans to spend more time flying and writing his second book. What’s more, he does not plan on working for another automaker (although anything’s possible and nothing is shabby for a 78-year-old).

  • Chevrolet Tests Social Media Technologies At South By Southwest
    by
    Mar 18th, 2010

Chevrolet Tests Social Media Technologies At South By SouthwestChevrolet was in full force at this year’s South by Southwest (SXSW) interactive – a conference that takes place every spring in Austin, Texas. Besides showing off the Camaro, Volt, and Cruze to over 185,000 attendees, the bow tie brand took a very unique and innovative approach to learn the best practices of emerging social media. To do just that, Chevy launched a pilot test of three mobile applications that allow it to connect to consumers. According to Jim Campbell, General Manager of the Chevrolet brand:

Social media is a powerful tool in a digital world where people can get news instantly on their smart phone, watch television shows on streaming video, and communicate with friends on social-networking sites. For Chevrolet, South by Southwest provides an invaluable opportunity to learn how best to communicate with customers in by leveraging these technologies.

The three apps up for review consist of location-based social networking, quick response, and augmented reality. Click past the break to read all about them and for the coveted GM Authority Take! (more…)

  • A European Designed Corvette?
    by
    Mar 18th, 2010

A European Designed Corvette?General Motors originally developed the Corvette to win over young hearts from Triumph, Austin Healey, and MG. Fast forward a few decades, and The General has one of the most affordable super cars on the market, along with a 57-year success story. Since the introduction of the Corvette and its progression towards becoming a more capable car, the ultimate Chevy sports car now faces tougher competition from Porsche. Conversely, Chevrolet would like the Corvette to be more successful in Porsche’s native Europe. And there’s yet another problem facing America’s true sports car: like the Corvette, the average buyer of GM’s masterpiece is aging. According to Power Information Network, a unit of J.D. Power and Associates, the current average age of a Corvette buyer is 54. Add in disappointing 2009 sales (approximately half of 2008 volume) and the Corvette story quickly becomes rather gloomy.

In order to appeal to an increased amount of buyers, GM is reportedly looking outside the Americas for the design of the seventh-generation Corvette. The desire for European influence in the design tells us that, even though the current Corvette has similar dimensions to the Porsche 911, its body makes it look bigger fatter than it actually is. This calls for a design that compacts the model’s proportions to the naked eye. Late in 2009, Ed Welburn, Vice President of Global Design at GM, asked The General’s ten worldwide design studios to come up with proposals for the next-gen ‘Vette.

With any luck, this will lead to a thoroughly refined interior on the C7, as many complaints about the current-gen sports car originate from the materials used inside the car. And let’s be honest for a minute – covering the dash in leather with an expensive option package doesn’t make the problem go away any more than covering a dirty old couch in a white sheet. In fact, this same old couch may have been the inspiration for the seats in the ‘Vette. If you haven’t experienced these first hand, here’s all you need to know: the seats simply aren’t up to the job of keeping drivers securely bolstered during maneuvers that the vehicle is (more than) capable of.

Perhaps a worldly design for the C7 will put more asses in those seats once it debuts in two-three years. We’ll have to wait and see, but in the meantime, check out the high-res Corvette gallery after the break!

  • Chevrolet Volt Undergoes Cold Weather Testing, Colder Than -30° Celsius
    by
    Mar 17th, 2010

Chevrolet Volt Undergoes Cold Weather Testing, Colder Than 30° CelsiusIt’s always exciting to see a new vehicle for the first time. But for some of us – yours truly included – it’s just as electrifying (pun intended) to see this vehicle go through the various testing stages before reaching production and general availability.

Recently, the Chevy Volt team took the upcoming plug-in EV to Kapuskasing, Ontario, Canada for some cold weather testing, where temperatures fall well into the negative double-digits (Celsius). Since GM engineered the Volt for all seasons and climates, this is a crucial performance and durability test. Right after the break, we have Volt Chief Engineer Andrew Farah and Global Voltec and Plug-In Hybrid Electric Powertrain Chief Engineer Pam Fletcher tell us some more about the test – with awesome in-the-snow Volt footage (and pictures) to boot! • 2012 Chevy Malibu Revealed In Patent Filings?
    by
    Mar 17th, 2010

2012 Chevy Malibu Revealed In Patent Filings? The Chevrolet Malibu is a great vehicle, but it has been eclipsed by competitors from Ford and Hyundai in the mid-size sedan segment. Not all is lost, however, as the next-generation Malibu will address whatever inferior qualities the current Malibu may have. In fact, the styling buck for the next-gen ‘Bu was shown to select members of the press on two occasions – but neither situation allowed for pictures to be taken. That’s why we’re thrilled to report that a recent General Motors filing with the United States Patent and Trademark Office shows an unfamiliar Chevrolet (four-door) sedan.

The sketches show that the car retains Chevy’s standard dual-port grille but gets more sculpted surfaces and body work. One of the areas the current Malibu has been criticized for is its uneventful (read: chopped off) rear styling. It looks like this will be addressed in the next-generation version, as the sketches show four tail lamps resembling those of the new Camaro.

The new Malibu will share the Epsilon II platform with the Buick Regal and LaCrosse (it currently utilizes the Epsilon I) and will retain the overall length of the current model, albeit with a shorter wheelbase. Currently, we don’t know whether the wheelbase will be equal to that of the new Buick Regal/Opel Insignia. What we do know is that the next-generation Malibu will be both wider and taller than the current sedan.

What’s more, the new Malibu is rumored to receive a major overhaul of the interior, with higher quality materials and increased ergonomics. Seeing as how newly-placed GM executives have vowed to produce the best cars and trucks on the planet, the GM Authority Team doesn’t doubt the credibility of this rumor one bit.

We expect the next Malibu to go on sale in late 2011 as a 2012 model, so we may even see it at the 2011 NAIAS. Feast your eyes on the future of the mid-size sedan segment in the gallery below!
