  • From The Fleet: Chevrolet Express Prisoner Transport

From The Fleet: Chevrolet Express Prisoner TransportWhile most vehicles we cover on this here site are usually purchased by end users, sometimes a few fleet vehicles slip through the cracks. And that’s exactly the case here.

Behold the Chevrolet Express Prisoner Transport Vehicle. As the name implies, the ominous-looking van is designed for “prisoner transport duty as well as general utility” and is available in a 3500 (1-ton) extended wheelbase model that includes standard seating for up to 12 and optional seating for up to 15 prisoners.

The bow tie van features GM’s StabiliTrak vehicle stability enhancement system and can tow up to 8,900 lbs. GM notes, however, that the “Express Van is not designed or intended for high-speed emergency vehicle operations,” so high-speed pursuits are out of the question.

Standard features include:

    • Vortec 6.0L V8 SFI engine with FlexFuel capability
    • 6-speed automatic transmission, heavy-duty, electronically controlled with overdrive and tow/haul mode
    • 600-cca battery
    • StabiliTrak traction assistance and vehicle stability enhancement system
    • Remote vehicle starter system, includes Remote Keyless Entry and two transmitters that have a remote panic button.

If you’re interested, have a look at GM’s official brochure for the fleet-only Express Prisoner Transport.

  • Rumormill: Revised Chevy Silverado HD’s 6.6L Duramax To Make Around 700 lb.-ft. Torque, 400 Horsepower

Rumormill: Revised Chevy Silverado HDs 6.6L Duramax To Make Around 700 lb. ft. Torque, 400 HorsepowerFor the most part, we’re very stoked about the updated Heavy Duty Silverados that were unveiled at the Chicago auto show just last week. Interestingly, the power output of the 6.6L DURAMAX V8 turbodiesel (mated to the Allison 1000 transmission) was not announced with the pickups. But we’ve received a few reports from trusted sources that pin the updated HDs powertrains at around 400 horses and 700 lb.-ft. of torque!

If true, these numbers represent gains of 35 hp and 40 lb.-ft. of torque compared to outgoing (pre-update) 2010 models.

We’ll wait for the folks at Chevy Trucks to announce the official numbers in a couple of weeks and see if they match up to what we’ve been told. But what do you think is taking them so long to announce them in the first place?

Check out the high-res gallery of the 2011 Silverado HDs after the break!

  • Vauxhall Nameplate Stays; GM European Strategy Undergoes Shift
    by
    Feb 16th, 2010

In an internal e-mail, GM Europe President Nick Reilly indicated that The General would continue to use the Vauxhall brand in the UK. That announcement should not have come as too much of a surprise, as the former Vauxhall General Operations Manager has close ties to the company. What were refreshingly different were the changes he outlined in The General’s European strategy. Full text of the five page document, which was received by tens of thousands of employees, can be found here.

First and foremost, Mr. Reilly rejected hiring an outside consultant to devise a mission statement, instead submitting an internally developed working vision statement:

To be a leading European Manufacturer of high quality, desirable automotive products, based on German Engineering, driven by a united team of professionals and respected around the world.

In identifying specific steps to achieve that vision, he first distinguished Vauxhalls and Opels, allotting the former for Brits and the latter for everyone else. In a departure from previous goals, ‘everyone else’ encompasses more than merely Europeans. If Opel products are to be “respected around the world,” the the impetus is on the company to “look for opportunities to sell Opel products outside Europe.”

Mr. Reilly, who also served as President of GM International Operations, has a unique perspective on the expansion. Acknowledging non-European sales as a historical weak point and noting that a strong Euro makes such exports even harder, he suggested that desirable products and a positive image will be the keys to growing exports. The products and image motif ran throughout the memo. While he emphasized superior products as more important, he conceded that GM’s image in Europe requires more work. It is from this theme that what will inevitably be the most quoted line from this directive emerges: (more…)

  • GM Works On Brand Loyalty For Shuttered Saturn
    by
    Feb 15th, 2010

GM Works On Brand Loyalty For Shuttered SaturnNow that the proverbial axe has freed General Motors from the financial obligations of too many brands, the company has to face the other side of the double-edged sword (all about the proverbs today). The negative end of the equation, among other things, is the potential loss of customers and market share that comes with having less brands. In order to combat this, GM is offering strong incentives to current Saturn customers.

How strong? Between February 2nd and the end of March, current Saturn owners are being offered $2,000 in cash to stick with another GM vehicle.

The catches are few and mild. Owners are required to have owned or leased their Saturn vehicle for at least 6 months. Besides that, GM is not requiring anything; customers do not even need to trade in their Saturn vehicle. In addition, the $2,000 offer is on top of any other currently running incentives. This could amount to serious cash on the hood for some GM vehicles.

General Motors needs to take any customer retention it can get, especially with Saturn owners. In fact, research shows that Saturn buyers are the least loyal to the parent GM, which is quiet logical as Saturn was always intended to be a “Japanese auto maker within GM” – a unique brand compared to other GM products. As such, Saturn customers are (were?) not you average GM buyer (if such a profile exists).

As of the end of January 31, 2010, Saturn inventory was at an all-time low of 405 vehicles (compared to 32,647 at the end of May 2009).

  • Chevrolet Chief On Volt Supply, Availability, Rollout
    by
    Feb 15th, 2010

Chevrolet Chief On Volt Supply, Availability, Rollout Last week, Lyle Dennis (from gm-volt.com) sat down with Jim Campbell, the freshly-appointed director of the Chevrolet brand and spoke about the Chevy Volt.

When asked about the bow tie brand’s plans to meet initial demand for the vehicle, Campbell didn’t give a direct answer, saying “there are ways to manage [high demand]” and that Chevy “will prepare for those [instances].” What’s more, Mr. Campbell thinks the Volt will be a gateway product to other Chevrolet vehicles:

Its always a challenging (scenario) but what I think is the positive side of it is that the fact there is that much interest keeps the enthusiasm high for Chevrolet overall. I think that provides benefits to the Chevrolet brand and all of the other vehicles that people start to notice and get introduced to that maybe they weren’t even thinking about when they started their level of interest in this case the Chevy Volt.

When asked about the time frame for a national rollout of the hotly-anticipated PHEV, Mr. Campbell didn’t give a specific time frame but did say that the vehicle will eventually be available in all US markets. The Volt is currently set to launch in three initial markets including California, Michigan, and Washington D.C.

Video: Hennessey Performance CTS V Does The Quarter In 11.14 SecondsHere’s another creation from the awesome folks at Hennessey – this time a manual 2011 Caddy CTS-V undergoes a transformation.

The CTS-V is no slouch to begin with, but Hennessey takes the Corvette ZR-1 derived 6.2L powerplant even further by adding a few bells and whisltles, including a cold air induction system, a smaller supercharger pulley, ling tube headers, a three-inch exhaust system, an upgraded intercooler, and a new engine management system. The result is a staggering 700 horsepower and 700 lb.-ft. of torque that can propel the four-door sedan from standstill to 60 mph in a lightning-fast 3.3 seconds.

Check out the video of the “Hennesey’d” CTS-V doing the quarter mile in 11.14 seconds at a top speed of 129.95 mph. Now that’s impressive! (more…)

  • Nostalgic Scenario: If I Could Control GM’s Departed Brands.

Nostalgic Scenario: If I Could Control GMs Departed Brands. We know the fate of Pontiac and Saturn. We know that Saab is taking off with Spyker while Hummer, the uber American SUV brand, is close to becoming a Chinese-owned entity. Yet secretly somewhere inside, we wish GM had room for all of these brands.

Let’s step into the Twilight Zone of GM proposals, imagine that I just became the owner of all four of GM’s departed brands, and started another major American automotive company. I want to succeed where GM failed. Assuming I will have access to GM’s engines and platforms – future and dormant, here’s how I’d do it, brand by brand. (more…)

  • Video: Department 180 Episode 1 – Smoke Test
    by
    Feb 12th, 2010

Video: Department 180 Episode 1 Smoke Test Behold the very first full episode of Department 180, Chevrolet’s new web series showcasing the vehicle testing team at the bow tie brand. The first installment, appropriately titled Smoke Test and available after the jump, shows the engineers filling a pressurized 2010 Chevy Equinox with smoke to test for leaks. This test is one of the measurements of a quiet ride. And just for fun, the Department 180 crew fills the ‘Nox with some other “stuff.”

Personally, I can’t give enough praise to Chevy/GM and the Department 180 series. Besides being awesome and educational at the same time (a rare combination), the program also makes for some very creative marketing and is an exemplary use of social media. Moreover, it gives Chevrolet a personal “face.” Now if only we could say the same about the GM Authority podcast series

In any event, watch the beautifully-produced video after the break and, if you haven’t yet done so, check out the Department 180 teaser by clicking here.
